OK, first off this isn't a rant, you the voting Gods gave this a 5.9865 so thats what its was good for in the June FS.

This little fella became my third highest scoring image recently and tried for something different in the June FS. I was at Banham Zoo with Talj watching the raptor show when I saw he had been fed so ran over to him because he was covering his lunch with his wings. For me, the icing on the cake was the fact I (luckily) captured his nictitating membrane halfway across his eye.

So, a 5.9 shouldn't be sniffed at (thanks) but I truly thought this shot would have scored higher and, not a single comment on his eye - its not a common sight is it?

It is not a common capture, true, but it also isn't that noticeable when you are viewing the whole picture. Relatively speaking, the eye is a tiny part of the picture. If that is what you really wanted noticed, it probably should have been a larger part of the picture.

I was too busy trying to figure out what was going on with his wings.

Thanks Karma, tbh as a large print it would be more obvious and (maybe wrongly) used the title to try and put more emphasis on it. that said even as a small part of the imge I'd have thought more people would have mentioned it (we, the voters do look at the entire image don't we).

As for the wings, sadly your right and I guess there are not as many people that understand this pose as I thought :(

Anyway, as I said earlier, its not a rant, just wanted some more input (guess its back to tighter profiles lol).

Karmat has pretty much hit it on the head. I would likely have missed the membrane, dismissing it as a reflection or lighting.

The wings really distract from the eye. Had you zoomed or cropped in so the head was the subject, more people might have noticed.

Personally, when I look at pictures I look at details, but it is how the picture works as a whole that forms my opinion.

I would agree that this is a rare shot, but at the same time since I am not a bird person, I honestly get an Ok...soooo... vibe about those kind of things. I did not vote in the challenge, but I probably would have given it a 6.

Even with your comments, I may still not appreciate how hard it was to get this shot, or how rare it might be.

During voting I did comment on your photo but did not notice the eye - sorry. Birds are one of my favorite targets. I would have never ventured to think this bird was mantling (covering food with wings). The composition was unique but pleasing - detail and color was outstanding which initially caught my eye. And yes I would agree capturing the membrane is not common for a photo such as this - an excellent one at that. Nice work.

I agree with the others. It is a nice shot, though the context of him covering his food is lost in the crop and the eye is too small in the photo to notice the eye membrane. I captured the same thing in a Redtail Hawk, which I entered in the "seeing the unseen" challenge. Since it was a full head shot you can see it more clearly even see the detail in the membrane. Here's a "Shamless plug" of one of my favorite shots. .

In addition to the other comments, I'd add that for some reason there were a lot of eagles in this month's Free Study, and a lot of very good shots (including yours). That tends to bring scores down a bit, because the first eagle shot may be stunning but the eighth stunning eagle shot is not.

I don't think I gave any of the eagle shots more than a 7, because there were so many. I gave yours a 6. Most of my 8s, 9s and 10s (and there were quite a few) went to images subjects that were more one of a kind.

Come on man... you will never win with a photo like that.

Your best bet to win something at DP is a water, milk, wine, or some other kind of "fluid" splashing up out of a cup.
