Happened once 2 months ago, and had camera "cleaned" at local shop.
And again today another "speck" showed up.
Its just a little spot of dust or debri on the focus screen, mirror is clean and sensor is also (not visible in any images).
But it bugs the hell outta me, I tried gently blowing it with a bulb blower (ear syringe), but still there.
If you have had a speck in viewfinder: do you live it, clean it yourself, or have it cleaned for you?
Buzzzzzzz.

Yes I have that too. Looks like it is on the same surface as the focus points.

Yep, same here. I took my camera into a local Photo Shop and they wouldn't even dare touch it....urrrggg. They said they didn't know about cleaning those Rebels. I guess I have to live with it too. I have tried to clean as much as I can myself, However, not wanting to go as far as getting more dirt, dust or anything on the viewfinder and much more hesitant to get crap all over my sensor and mirror....It bothers me but, at least it dosen't bother me as much as if the dirt showed up on my prints or files. Then we would be fighting it out! :)

My 10D has been accumulating some crud on the viewfinder screen as well. Mostly small fibers. I will probably investigate cleaning it the next time I do a sensor cleaning, which should be in the next month or so, or maybe the next time I try to shoot at f/22 and go "YUCK!" when I look at the results, LOL.

Me too, live with it, I do! On the mirror is no problem on the sensor another story! Do you clean your sensor yourself Fritz, I haven`t tried that yet.

Yes, I have cleaned it twice since last August. I tend to wait until the dirt really bugs me.
I use a homemade "sensor swipe" tool and pec pad, wetted with "eclipse-like-solution", that is, HPLC-grade methanol (<1ppm residue).

Yes. One right in the center of the view. It's not noticeable unless I shoot a solid colored area. I had a pretty good image of a boat and fisherman in the fog that I wanted to submit to a challenge once but I didn't because the spot was clearly visible and I wasn't allowed to clone it out. Bummer. Oh yeah, as you can see I have a fixed lense camera. At least I shouldn't be getting any more.

I have a tiny but quite noticeable speck at the bottom left corner of my viewfinder. I just live with it, it's not worth the hassle of sending the camera for service for a thing such as that -- "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" ;-)

Yep, I get specks on my focus screen as well... but have learned to live with it. I did clean it once and that has helped.

specks, dust, spots ggrrr hate it all bugs me bugs me bugs me!
anyone tried the co2 approach to cleaning?
03/30/2004 09:30:03 PM · #11
No.
Knowing me (hey, it's not easy knowing yourself), if I had one, I'd have probably removed it before it got there. ;-)

I have also considered wearing gloves to prevent thrumb prints on the LCD. But what bugs me most are footprints - not on the camera but in landscapes.

Geez Zues,
I thought I was anal!!
Luckily for me my local shop has a woman that is great servicing camera's-
And since I bought it there, they/she does it for free.
And yes they are certified..

It happens occasionally on mine but it's easy to brush off.

I have one in between the layers on my focus screen that bugs the hell outta me. It's not in the picture, just in between on of those layers that makes up the viewer...

I have to try extremly hard to keep my self from trying to "fix" it.

I recently noticed a dust bunny in its first stages of life in my viewfinder. Since I'm going to NYC soon, I would really like to get rid of him. I was really bummed when looking at yesterday's pics and noticed that my dust bunnies are multiplying. It seems like I have about TEN showing up in my photos.

Any advice for first attempts at cleaning the sensor? I'm willing to do it myself, but am a bit nervous about it. Should I buy the cleaning kit or do like Fritz and make my own? Is it that bad cleaning them?

Thanks for your help.

I have quite a bit of dust in my viewfinder as well, but it's not that big of a deal because I don't really use it because I use the LCD screen.

The focus screen above the mirror is not the focus sensor, clean it with a cotton swab -- that's all I did.

I just had my camera fixed by canon(shutter replaced) and now one week later there is a big speck in my viewfinder!
What gives?
Also noticed a bunch of specks on shots at F22 and above...this sucks :(
What should I clean my lenses with? Not talking camera, but lenses...maybe the dust on them is getting in to the sensor. I only put two lenses on since I got it back so I just don't get this. Gonna call Canon and see about having it cleaned better. Maybe they can do it while I wait....yeah right :)

If you want to upset yourself, take a shot of a the sky or a white wall at the smallest aperture you have (f22 or so)

Then load it up in photoshop and boost the contrast way up.

Scream, panic and then realise there isn't much you can do about it without going mad :)

Yep, I got 'em here, too, and they drive me nuts. They're especially evident on nice, blue skies in landscape shots.

I have cleaned them myself with a cotton swab and alcohol a couple times, but it scares the crap out of me to do so. I don't know whether I'll do that again, just because it literally puts me into a panic when I try it.

is it ok to clean the lens and viewfinder with 99% alcohol?
04/11/2004 07:16:21 PM · #23
Loads of specks in my view finder / mirror, none show up in photos so I guess none on sensor, yet...
Very annoying, will try cleaning them out shortly.

eeeek! Im a month away from my first Digital SLR (probably a D70), and this all sounds SCARY.

Prevention is better than cure: so how do you guys try and prevent this happening?

Keep lenses clean.
Change lenses quickly - have the new one ready when I take the old one off.
Keep the camera pointing down when the lenses are off.
Switch off the camera when changing lenses.
