I don't remember where I am supposed to do this but someone suggested posting about photoshoots that we have done recently so here's mine... I took a trip up to Linville Falls early this morning and I have posted some of my results HERE.

Nice job, John. I really like Linville, and the surrounding area. My husband and I have visited/hiked/picnic-ed there some. Don't know that I've ever gotten up early to go take pictures, though. Getting up early usually gets in the way. ;-) There are also some nice spots between on the Parkway between Brevard and Waynesville that would be great places to shoot, especially in the Fall. Also over in the Cashiers/Franklin/Highlands area further west.

those are nice, john--sure makes me miss the mountains! these pictures remind me a little of my favorite spot on the parkway--"graveyard fields" (go south from asheville or black mtn.). if you ever get a chance, you gotta go there--spent many of my young adult summers there swimming in the perfectly clear pool underneath the 100 ft. waterfall and sunning on the boulders! ah, those were the days. thanks for the memories!!:)

I still didn't get up early enough as you can see in these photos... I needed to be in the gorge by 730am it seems... I didn't get in there until 830 and the sun was already on the falls...

I would like to get south on the parkway sometime... Maybe you and your husband can meet me and my girlfriend up there somewhere one nice weekend and we can all take some pitchers :)

Sounds like a winner to me. I only live a few minutes from the Parkway, but I don't get up there much. We used to go riding every Sunday afternoo; haven't done it in a while. Fall is probably the most dramatic season, but summer is nice too, as long as there is not too much haze (guess that's why we call the Smoky Mountains!). amitchell hit the nail on the head with graveyard fields. Devil's courthouse and Shining Rock are close by too, relatively speaking. Just off the parkway are Sliding Rock, Sunburst, and the Pinkbeds. Just depends on how much you want to walk -- good shoes are probably as important as a good camera. :-)
If anyone is ever in Western North Carolina, and you like the "wilderness," Cataloochee is probably one of the best places to go.

Happy shooting!

Nope, I'm a Tuscola graduate. Did you go to TC?

no, just had friends who went there (i remember a girl named karma--wondered if you were she!)--I actually had the mixed curse of going to Owen, but I think our chorus competed against yours in mars hill many a year. in fact, if i remember correctly, your tuscola had one of the best choruses in the state!

John, those are great. They make me really miss Western Carolina! I am hoping I can make it up that way this summer. There are so many great places to do photos along the Parkway. Also, that area down near Brevard has some of the nicest waterfalls. There is a great book I found in Asheville on the waterfalls of the lower Apps. My goal is to one day photograph them all! One of my favorite places is Catawba Falls, between Ridgecrest and Old Fort. It isn't as dramatic as some of the falls, but it is worth the several mile hike.
