So do you think one Quantum Turbo 2x2, NiMH battery is okay to pack in my carry on camera bag (a Tamrac Velocity-9)?

I may have to pack it in my checked in suitcase so I can fit all my lenses in my carry on. Which is a better location.

In general, you don't want batteries in the hold 'cus if they're near a heat source they could explode. Check the airport authority website for details on where batteries should be carried.

I haven't heard about the heat source thing ... I had heard they didn't want "loose batteries" where they could flop around and come in contact with each other. But if they are in a carrying case, or in the device itself, then they are perfectly fine.

I don't have a Quantum Turbo 2x2 (lucky dog!), but I had LOTS of camera equipment (and laptop) as well as lots of batteries on my recent trip to and around Brazil and never had any trouble.

Okay, thanks for the feedback.
What about 3 coiled cables, should I leve them in my carr-on 18Lb. bag or put in the suitcase?

I will leave at least one, so I can show them that it powers my SB-800 flash and now I got cable for the camera, too. Tha last one is a hotshoe off camera iTTL extension cable.

I am no expert on this but if you have loose batteries, cables, and a timer in your carry on it might slow your progress through security.......lol

I checked in our rule data base and found the following, but I suggest you contact the TSA for a final reading.

Lithium Batteries no longer allowed in checked luggage

Effective, 01Jan08, the Federal Government prohibits the
carriage of spare lithium batteries in the aircraft hold.
Checked baggage will be screened as it is inducted into the
system (i.e. the CTX machines). Screeners will be asked to
remove these dangerous goods from checked baggage.

Please advise any customer asking about this regulation that
spare lithium batteries, such as laptop and DVD player
rechargeable batteries and lithium metal AA style batteries,
may only be carried on to the aircraft. They may not be in
checked luggage.

Here is a link that might get you started.

See you tomorrow in Calgary :)

How hot does it get in the average aircraft? Methinks that if it gets hot enough in the hold to cause a battery to explode, that particular explosion will be on a miniscule scale compared to the fact that the plane's already on fire.

Cargo holds are kept at more or less the same temperature and pressure as the cabin. The hold does get a bit hotter when on the ground and a bit cooler when flying, but it is sufficiently temperate for pets to fly.

It is difficult, sometimes, to understand why the TSA makes the rules they make.

I always put the bulk of my wires and things (battery chargers with their cables etc) in my checked luggage. I like to carry as little as possible. However, if you have a cable you can't afford to be without... my advice is to carry it with you.

The only Lithium batteries are the five, in the SB-800 flash unit. That will also be in my carry-on bag. There are 2 enl... batteries in the Camera. The Quantum Turbo 2x2 battery actually powers everything.

The connecting cables are like the old land-line telephone coiled cables.

I was just wondering if it made a difference if I put just one or all three cables in the bag. I may leave in all three then I could do a "demo" if asked, and take their picture.

AN UPDATE:

I went through CLE/YYZ/YYC, Cleveland-USA/Toronto-CA/Calgary-CA, airports with no problems. They only padded almost everything with pads for their chemical-analysis machines.
