Im new to this forum and saw that it was too late to enter the "Orange" contest, and have a photo titled Orange Smoke, I thought might have done well in the competition. Anyways here it is. I would enjoy any feedback on this photo if anyone thinks it would have done well in the challenge compared to what has already been entered. Thank you and hope you enjoy it.

THis is just an ordinary sunset with no subject focus. Nothing really great about. I would give a vote of 2/10

I find the photo well-taken. It captures a mood of tranquility and a sense of infinity. Keep up the good work and enjoy the coming competitions!

I like the contrast, focus, and lighting. That said, it's a nice photograph. I don't think it would win the orange challenge, but it would do well. My only complaint is that is seems uneventful. Maybe a bird or greater changes in the landscape would have helped. I'm not sure, but it seems to be lacking something. Still a nice photo.

Not to be negative or anything but I wouldn't vote this high at all. Your image hasn't got anything interesting happening beyond the sky. It would probably do well here though because people are still awed by pretty sunsets, as common as they are. Kind of makes me mad to be honest because someone can go outside at dusk quickly shoot a snap shot at the sky and place in the top 20 or top 10 when someone who spent a lot of time perfecting their shot gets overlooked. I tend to not want to vote sunset shots above 4 unless there's something else in the picture that gives it the wow factor... silhouettes are really good for that...

I would have voted it fairly high. Lots of orange and has a nice flow. I think the color here is enough to make this an effective shot.

So someone running out at dusk with a friend and telling them to stand in front of it quick-like so they get can get a shot of the sunset AND their friend and ends up making their friend a silhouette because it's a quick snapshot are 'wow'?

I've traveled 5 hours to get to a location, been bitten by bugs, verbally abused by drunks, taken quite a few shots to get such the right coloring of the sky and mood to get a sunrise/set... but to you it would just be a quick snapshot.

Some images can look like they were taken in 2 minutes and the photographer had spent hours doing so, other images can look like they took hours to set up and are actually a 2 second first snap image. I think it is rather assumptious of you to vote down shots that you think someone took little time to shoot.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions, but sheesh... the reasons why some people vote down images is really getting pathetic.

I can't say how this photo would compare to the others in the challenge because I haven't seen them yet, but I like this one. I'm one of the suckers for sunsets, I guess. I live in the city and rarely get to see the sun set, and when I do, it's not behind mountains. So thanks.

Was there anything in that post of mine that said I absolutely do not give any sunset shots a score above 4? NO. What I said was I dont usually give high scores to sunset pictures unless there's something that gives it the wow factor. And in this particular case I dont see anything special beyond the sky. And I dont think it's enough to vote it high. All there is in this picture is a horizon with a few bumps, and a sky. That's it. And by silhouette I didn't mean the back of your friend's head.. I meant something that will change the horizon of your picture. A landmark, a bird, a statue in the distance, something that can be distinguished in its silhouette form. Something to give some depth to your image.

I tried, but they were more concerned with showing me the moon.

No, you said you get mad when sunset shots end up in the top 20. If an image ends up in the top 20 then usually they are fairly good according to the masses that voted on it. You also implied that any shot that looks like it was taken quickly is automatically a snapshot that does not warrant a high score. It's fine to say what score you would give this particular image, but sweeping generalisations and assumptions about how long and how much effort someone does to take a shot is partly a basis for how you vote is what I was commenting on. If someone takes a 'snapshot' (the definition in this particular case meaning a shot taken quickly) and it it is good then who cares how long it took them, similarly, if someone took 10 hours and 1k photos to 'perfect' a shot and it still looks bad then it will still look bad.

Well mine "orange" shot was just a shot taken while testing my new lighting setup for my free study shot. Spur of the moment, not even intended for the challenge.

So there! You'll all be fooled!!! MOUAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!! :-)

Actually mine is too (spur of the moment kinda)... the photo was intended for my portfolio but ended up replacing my original idea for the challenge. :D The original idea which was "technically" good, IMO, replaced with a snapshot.
Good luck to all!

My orange challenge was spur of the moment too. I worked on my original entry for the whole week perfecting my idea, I think it was good in theory, but really turned out horribly in the photos. Scrambling around with only a few hours left to submit, I entered my spur of the moment photo. So, good luck to all of the spur of the moment people this challenge, and good luck also to all of the people who spent a long time on their photo & actually got what they were looking for. :)

Just spreading some love into this room. :) :)

taking a good portion of the black bottom off the image would greatly improve the impact of the sunset and the silouette of the hills/mountains beyond. with that, I might score it a 6 or so off hand.

welcome to the site.. keep challenging yourself. that's what is fun about it :)

In my opinion, the shot is beautiful and tranquil. I would have scored it at least a 6 or 7.

For whatever it's worth (and not meant in any way as an attack on anyone) I think that photographers can get caught up in technical aspects and preparations and obsessions about 'just the right thing' too much sometimes. You have to be able to see and appreciate beauty before you can point your camera at it. I like the simple beauty of this shot. It really doesn't matter if someone was camped out for days to get exactly this cloud configuration, or was driving along and thought, 'wow, that's really pretty' and took the shot. It's still a pretty picture.

I just wish that the orange challenge would have been 3 weeks ago so I could enter this pic:

//www.pbase.com/image/26303032

I went out looking for another broad-banded water snake this weekend and the only one I could find was well hidden behind a bunch of weeds and I didn’t much feel like wading out into the water to try to move them out of the way.

This one would have been my second choice
