Due to some apparent confusion, we wish to remind the community that making any selections in Basic Editing, including during RAW conversion, is not permitted under the Basic Editing Rules. In order to clarify this area of the Basic Rules, we have updated the language to read:

You May Not:
- use any selection tool, including but not limited to the marquee, lasso, layer masks, quick masks, or any similar tool to select a portion of your image for any reason other than cropping or creating a border.

This wording change does not change what's legal/illegal but clarifies that masks, including layer masks and quick masks, are considered selection tools, as are all other ways of selecting parts of a photo.

Perhaps an even more exact clarification could read:

Adjustment layers must not contain a mask. Adjustment layers that do contain a mask must be set so that every pixel is set to 255,255,255.

Or something like that?

Edit: What about clarification on the opacity of a layer?

Let me get this straight. The prince is not to leave the room, even if you come and get him?

The rules seemed pretty clear before. So, if it is deemed necessary to specify some editing methods as examples, you might want to include things like the U-Point technology in Nik software and Nikon Capture NX.

Obviously, changes made to an image using these programs are done by selecting only parts of the image and are therefore not allowed. But if anything would need to be specified to avoid confusion or mistakes, then these should certainly be mentioned also.
