I wonder if I'm the only one who hasn't passed out a ten in a challenge yet. It's not that I never plan to, it's just that I'm saving those for that image so rare that it captivates me instantly. When I do give out a ten, it will be not to award some technical aspect of the image, but because it strikes a chord with me personally. I've only been around here a year or so (and really active the last six months), but I can see handing out only one or two tens a year.

I haven't started using favorites yet either, but any ten I give out I would make an instant favorite.

For that matter, I haven't given anyone a one yet either -- saving those for the image that repulses me instantly.

Just curious how generous (or miserly) other are with tens. (The recent thread about having an eleven to award was obviously a non-issue with me.)

I think I've only given out 3 or 4 in the 2 years I've been here, maybe even less.

I guess it takes less to impress me, I give out 10's in every challenge.

I hand em out like lollipops at the bank.

I lied... I guess I have about half a dozen.

Barbara, it all depends on your personal voting criteria :)
Some folks give their top pick 10, bottom pick 1, with the rest ranging between.
Some use 10 for perfect and 1 for worthless.
Neither way is wrong, just different :)

How do I find out how many I gave out?

I give out 10's often, 1's almost never. I do try to use the entire voting spectrum. I understand that consistency is the most important thing, I would never say mine is the "right" way to vote, just the one that works for me.

Good grief man! You won't run out of them, ya know ;P

I'll always find some photographs worthy of a 10.

I always give at least one 10 (most of the times a few more) in every challenges that I vote.

For me, a 10 represent the best pictures in that specific challenge. It doesn't have to be a once in a lifetime picture to get a 10 from me.

I give out 10's in every challenge (there may have been 1 challenge where I did not give a 10). I have voted on every challenge since I joined. In some challenges I give more than one 10. I would be embarrassed to admit that I had never given a 10. What in the world are you waiting for, a photo by god himself?

I throw tens around like confetti. Encouragement is a great way to help people improve.

Yes, usually my top-rated of the challenge is a 10. On the opposite end, I rarely, if ever give a 1 or 2.
06/02/2008 09:48:03 PM · #15
I don't give them out in every challenge but almost. I stopped using 1's, 2's and 3 votes though. Bvy, go ahead and give them out but keep that special pic for your favs. Just a suggestion.

At least a 100+ if not double that. Looking at "Managing my Favorites" every statistical photograph on the first and only page received a 10 vote from me. What's interesting is only a few users have more than one 10 from me. So they are dispersed among a lot of photographers.

ETA: I usually give out 3-10's in a challenge, rarely more. Rarely do I give out a 1 or 2.

I only give 10s out when they strike a chord in me, as well.

I guess my chords are just easier struck. :)

I guess I need to lighten up and start handing them out more freely (or just start handing them out). I certainly don't mind receiving them. I see also that my average vote given (5.35 and some change) is lower than most. Guess I can work on that too.

Just because you have not handed out any 10's does NOT mean you are voting incorrectly. You vote based on how you feel about the photograph. No one here votes the same and your "Avg vote given" of 5.3ish is not bad. You have the right to vote the way you feel as long as you know your vote is a fair one.

Just vote the way you want, bvy. Don't worry about being "nice." Just be "honest."

I totally agree with this. I give out at least one 10 a challenge, sometimes maybe 5 or 6. I have never given a one yet to any image. I probably have given out only a handful of two's. I have given some three's though.

I vote on a kind of modified curve. Sometimes I don't give out any 10s, but that's rare. Usually I give out 1-3 and sometimes as many as 5-9 (that's an estimation, not a count). I hardly ever give out any 1s or 2s (not since I was a newbie to DPC).

Go to manage favorites then the statistically favorite images link on the left side. Would be nice to also see the statistics by year.

I gave out many more 10's in the first year of being here, then tapered off but I still do give them out. Not in each challenge though.
