For my class project I have to go out and shoot a "story" (20 pictures) on a single topic. Some of the suggestions are National Parks, Wilderness Scenics, Environmental Issues, etc. I'm in Ventura, CA, but there's nothing cool around here. Anyone have any good locations I could go and shoot this time of year? (I'd like to keep it within 4 hours driving distance) I want to blow my teacher, Ralph Clevenger, away and shoot some awesome stuff. He's one of the world's best nature photographers, and he's the guy who shot that well-known iceburg photo.

Last week the class just got back from camping in Big Sur...GREAT place if anyone ever needs a short vacation.

I'm not exactly sure if this fits the assignment, but you could choose a color (red is cool) and go walkaround in the area. Find anything RED, and take a photo of it, with making sure the composition is absolutely perfect in every photo.

This gives a very nice serie of photos!

Good luck with the assignment!

You do know that iceberg photo is not real, right? I mean the top part above water may be, but nothing else.

Ya, he told us all that last class and we were all shocked. It's 4 pictures taken in 4 different locations. It sure fooled me though!

And the bottom part of the iceberg is not even an underwater ice shot. I saw that picture a few years ago and wasn't fooled by it, there is no way you can photograph that as is.

back to the original question - I completed a photo essay on the people of Calgary and used environment portraits to portray them. Its simple and doesn't involve a lot of travelling. The difficult part is asking people if you can take their picture.

That is, of course, assuming that it doesn't have to be some sort of nature photography in which case um...don't do it.

I'd imagine you could find lots of subjects for Environmental Issues close to home, such as a landfill, recycling depot/plant, maybe belching smokestacks, litter, subdivisions encroaching on farmland....etc., etc., etc. Maybe the not-so-pretty approach?

Here are a couple of suggestions:

1. You could do a story about surfing. Ventura has some of the best surf spots in Southern California, like the Santa Clara Rivermouth, Ventura Jetty, Ventura Pier, California Street, Fairgrounds, etc., etc... That would give you lots of opportunities for some great beach/surf/sunset/bikini photos.

2. You could do a story about Mission San Buenaventura. Since the mission is very old, having been started around 1782, you could process the photos with a lot of black and white or sepia to make them look old. That would give you some good photo opportunities.

Being that I'm an old surf dog, I think #1 would be a no-brainer. ;)

Back in the day when I had to do a project like this for my degree, I did it by changing shutter speeds which gave me a huge selection of subjects and feel for individual photos.

Whoa! Anybody living in Ventura/Ventura County that can't figure out what to photograph ought to consider changing their field of study to something other than photography. Further, I really don't know what we are doing here helping you with your homework. I'm sure your prof has give suggestions that you didn't hear; you need to pay attention in class.

That said! You live in one of the most photographed places in the US. The movie industry is just down the street. The Santa Barbara coast is the only place on the west coast with a significant southern aspect. There are the channel islands and the Santa Barbara channel. Looking north there is the Los Padres National forest, the San Rafael and Smith wildernesses. My favorite, the Cuyama Valley (it once was green and lush with beaver throughout, now it's desert - Ain't that a story). It's spring, how about wildflowers or elephant seal calving??? Southern Calif. is the land of the automobile and the cost of gas is going up! up! up!.

If you know anyone who owns a restaurant/bakery you can shoot there all day, start to close, the kitchen staff, the wait staff, signs for lunch and dinner specials as they come up go down. THe workers who come in for the last shift. If its a bakery, they probably get there really early. You could preface each section of the story, with a photo of the building as the light in the day changes. Start out with one before sunrise then the morning going-ons before they open(3-4 photos) Then once they open take another 3-4 photos plus the out infront of the store shot. Then late afternoon in front of the store plus a few photos. Last wait til they are closed and then do 3-4 more until the last person leaves.

Shoot to your strengths. What do you like to shoot? Find a story in that.
