Hi all - inspired by Gordon's great general idea here, let's see if we can drum up some interest in a side challenge for June.

The idea is to pick one prime lens (or one focal length of you only have a zoom available) and shoot all pictures for the month with that lens. No switching out! If you don't normally work with primes this is a great way to get some exposure to "composing in your head" and "zooming with your feet." If you do normally shoot primes, perhaps pick a focal length that you don't use as often.

Ideally you would shoot everything for the entire month with the one lens, or the one focal length, but if that is a little draconian then just commit to shooting all the images for the side challenge with the one lens or one focal length. To get the best benefit from the exercise, it's probably best to keep your cropping to a minimum, but other than that, post-processing can generally fall along the lines acceptable within the Advanced Editing rule set.

A photo a day would be great, but feel free to participate at whatever level you have time for. Remember that participation in a side challenge is only partially about posting photos, and that one of the things participants really enjoy is receiving comments on their photos from the other participants.

Two of the the best thing about side challenges:
1) no DQs!
2) No DNMC Nazis!)

Current participants are:

If you are interested in joining, post below and I will add your name to the list. Once the month gets going I will start a new thread for the results.

Also, if you have been putting it off, this is a perfect opportunity to pony up for that DPC membership. Makes it much easier to view and comment on your photos. (And therefore much more likely that you will get views and comments on your photos.)

Come on . . . you know you want to.

I'm probably going to regret this, but I'll give it a shot. Are we supposed to give you which lens we will be using, or what focal length?
eta: I'll use this lens. Not sure where I'll "tape" it down to yet, I need a moment to think about it.

Put me down with a 50mm 1.4. And for myself, as close to zero editing as possible - this will be a challenge!

Now this starts to get interesting :-)

Hi all,
count me also in with a 35mm/f2.0.

I've never participated in a side challenge, so let's see how this goes...

Well, I was taking some pics today with my 50mm. Put me down for that. f2.8 macro.
05/22/2008 06:34:12 AM · #12
I'm in. Should be fun. I'll use my 50mm f/2.
05/22/2008 07:15:15 AM · #13
I only have zooms, so I'll duct tape my 28-300mm f3.5 at 100 and join the fun.

Sounds great, sign me up with my 50mm 1.8. My final exams will be over and it's about time I participated in another side challenge. Looking forward to it!

Well, being that I only have the 18 -200mm... I figure I'll opt for the extremes- any suggestions on 18 vs 200? Either would be interesting for me. Also, I'd be wussing out and only doing it for this challenge so that I can get my feet wet elsewhere with more ease. Lastly, what PP guidelines would be used?

I think only allowing yourself to do minimal cropping would give the best benefit to restricting yourself to one focal length. That way you really begin to know what the scene is going to look like before you put the camera to your eye. That said, I usually shoot for 8x10 aspect ratio and will probably crop my shots for this similarly.

As for other post-processing that's up to you. You don't have to be as extreme as Art (this will be an interesting month). I would say anything from the Advanced editing rules is fair game.

I'll update the participants list later today.

I don't normally do the side challenges but I'll give it a try with my:
50 mm f/1.8

Actually I've never done a side challenge so if someone can explain to me how it works... (Me is a bear of a very little brain)

I am afraid I don't know how a side challenge works, but if someone fills me in, I am in. 50mm F2.0

Side challenges usually have themes and you try to stick to that. Here's anexample. I set up a new folder/collection in my portfolio for the side challenge. Then you post your thumbnail pic in the thread that's set up for posting. Most people leave comments for others and you receive lots too. I like them because if I didn't do them I would have nothing but bird and dog pictures!!!

So, this is any subject/theme as long as we stick with our selected lens.

Why not make it a real challenge and limit to basic editing rules and cropping in one axis only for aspect ratio selection?

You can do that if you want. "Rules" for side challenges are usually pretty relaxed. We don't want too many rules, then nobody wants to play, and that's no fun.
