Can someone link a definition (not a personal explanation) of what 'dappled light' is? Searching google turns up little of worth. |

.. is a fair example.
"Dappled" refers to light that is filtered through something so that it hits here & there. In this example it is filtered through the trees.

"One of the most challenging lighting situations include dappled light. Create a photo that has dappled light as it's main light source."
I don't like to be pedantic, but it should be 'its' not 'it's'!

very well figaro, "it's" interesting what kind of things can people notice. but we're all humans and I guess this is a "photo site".
;) but still it's great you've noticed such a detail |

I do beg your pardon. Misuse of apostrophes is just one of my pet hates! I'll try to keep it in check in the future. ;)
Welcome to the site by the way :) |

MINE TOO! :)
This challenge is one of the things I have real problems with. Anyone have some good advice?

woods are nice for dappled light due to the leaves diffusion of the sunlight. If you can get a light source through water it looks cool as well, i'm not sure how rain would work but it just might...
putting a flash through a water cooler would probably work, or even manufacturing some kind of clever snoot/gobo for a flash system would work too.
I'm just rambling now.

I've got a shot I took last week that I think meets the challenge, but I'm not sure everyone would agree, simply because it doesn't fit the narrow description specified in that link.
Does anyone mind having a look at the shot and giving me an opinion? I'm not posting it here now because (a) I won't be able to upload it till tonight, and (b) it's my only idea so far so I might yet be reshooting it this week :-) It's taken as read that anyone who looks agrees not to vote on my shot if they see it in voting. |

My entry for the 'Every Picture Tells a Story' challenge is a good example for dappled light...
The misty and low contrast look accross the entire photo somewhat hides the strength of the lighting effect, so it may not be a good choice for this challenge, but if you can imagine this image sans mist, I think that is what people will be looking for.
ETA: I predict that the winner of this challenge will not use trees/leaves for dappling the light. People will soon get tired of the same effect. A photo using some yet unthought of technique will 'shine' above the other entries.

Just to digress a bit more, I'm with figaro on this one. And it's good to see that the Challenge description corrected its "it's".
A good way to think about it: "It's" is ALWAYS a contraction of it is. |

Did anyone see the episode of the Apprentice where it took them 3 HOURS to figure out where to put an apostrophe? Disgraceful.
These clowns need an education yo! |

Pied Beauty
GLORY be to God for dappled things—
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;
Landscape plotted and pieced—fold, fallow, and plough;
And áll trádes, their gear and tackle and trim.
All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise him.
— Gerard Manley Hopkins

A good, non-sunlight example of dappled light would be what you get from a disco ball :-)

When I try dappled light I always end up blowing the light or losing the detail. How best to handle such a high-contrast subject? (I don't have a light meter, btw)
For example;

I am actually thinking of triggering my flash through a collander. I'll have to see what the results are but that's one idea.
