I have just purchased a canon 17 - 40 F4L. I have read lots on the argument for and against using filters. I have decided to go ahead and use one to protect my lense as im not comfortable having it exposed. I have purchased a Hoya 77mm UV "coated both sides" for £39.99 in a purple packet

I just wondered if this is considered sufficient, or a cheap filter?

Will it serve well as a protector and be suitable to be kept on all the time?

Any help much appreciated thanks

Edit: Here is the link to what i have bought:

I am now thinking if this is the btter option?

they're essential I think if you don't have a hood.

I splashed out on the HMC Super pro 1 filters on mine, it's the really thin one. You have to be careful with the cheaper lenses
because they might vignette due to the larger frame.

The old saying goes that you're better off replacing a scratched filter than a scratched lens.

And basically, get the best you can afford, especially with that quality of glass behind it.

I think mine has a positive effect on contrast, aberrations and lens flare. Overall, an important part of my kit.

probably yes. The Hoya website has a nice breakdown of the filter effects and what filter has what coatings.

A word to the wise: there's a shop on eBay that is about 40% of retail, that's where I got both of mine from (77mm and 58mm).

Thanks for the advice tez, just im looking at going out tomo and using the lens, and im relucatant to use it without a filter. Are uv filters good to use in all situations such as low light, or are they designed just for day time landscape stuff?

Linkified: From the original post: purple series filter at Jessops and HMC (orange series) filter at Warehouse Express

Yes yes yes definitely!

It looks to me like the purple series is the uncoated (or maybe single-coated) range?

Hoya's SMC (super multi-coated, orange packaging) is far better than the purple series.
The Pro1D range (black packaging) is better still.

I use Pro1D on all my lenses. If you want to see the valid arguments for and against using UV filters, there are plenty of other threads to look at - but I think most would agree that if you are going to use a filter, it should be as good as possible. There's not much point in spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollarpoundeuros on a lens and then putting a dirt cheap filter in front of it.

I always keep my UV filter on for day-to-day shooting, but when I'm setting up for a great shot which I know will be good, I take the UV filter off and store it with the lens cap until I'm done with that shot. Unless someone starts throwing rocks at your lens, or you drop it on the ground, it should be safe for the few minutes without the filter!
