I'm thinking of buying someone's photos to use for an art project I'm working on. Basically, I will be buying probably 20 photos in .jpg format. I will have no exclusive rights to the photos at all, and the files will be no larger than 150x150 pixels. I will only use them in printed format, with prints being no larger than 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch square (hence the 150x150 pixels). Basically, I'm going to take all the files, arrange them in photoshop on a single file, and have that file printed out at WalMart as a 4x6 photo or something, and physically cut out the tiny pictures for use. Each photo will be used at most twice in this way. It's very likely that the resulting project will be sold by me for profit, but not for very much profit.

What would you charge for this? The person I'm talking to has no experience really in selling her photos, but at the small size I need, I don't need a professional photographer to take them, either, really, since no one will ever be able to see much detail in the pictures. But I don't want to rip her off, either. How much should I pay per picture, and would it change your answer if I were ordering 50 of these pictures instead of 10 or 20?

I think it depends on whether she was going to take these pictures anyways. If she took these pics specifically for you I would give her a little more. I would also ask her how much time would be involved in these 20 photos.
I had a friend that wanted some of my eagle pictures, I only charged the cost to have them printed because I took the pictures for myself, not specifically for him.

Yeah, they are all images she already has taken, just sitting around. Probably taken at various times over the past years. I suspect she'd take as low as 50 cents an image - is that totally unreasonable?

That's actually the range I was thinking. between 50 cents to a dollar. I was going to say , be generous and give her $20.00 for all of them, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at 50 cents an image, especially if I'm not doing anything with them.
