I am debating between these 2 lenses and I know people will say "depends on what you shoot", let me tell you what I have and what I like to shoot:
- Nikon D300 with an 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 Nikon lens.
- 70-300 F/4-5.6 Nikon ED lens.
Photography is just a hobby for me so I shoot landscapes, concerts (day and night), portraits, and candid shots. I am leaning towards the 24-70 since it could replace my stock 18-135 with a sharper lens.
Suggestions? |

From what you list as liking to shoot, it would seem that the 24-70 would be perhaps the better choice. Anyway, my 24-70 is my most-used lens, so I'll go for pressing my prejudices on to you.

I'd say the 24-70 first, although I use both equally. However, the 24-70 is a bit more versatile, especially in smaller spaces.
I know you said we'd say "it depends what you shoot," but it really does depend what you shoot! The 24-70 is great for landscapes, concerts, portraits, and candids, but then the 70-200 is also great for landscapes, concerts, portraits, and candids.
I'd say you have a dilemma on your hands, but you really don't. Either way, you'll be extremely happy.

Both are excellent pieces of glass.
I'd go with the 70-200. The IF and VR make it just a bit better IMHO.
The good news is that you can't make a bad choice, : )

Thank you all, I am leaning towards the 24-70 since I am usually using the 18-135 the most. Now I've got to convince the wife that I "need" it without giving her an excuse to buy something expensive later on (although I am sure she'll say "well, you bought a 2,000 dollar lens"). :) |

in the middle of the same decision ..
sold off both my 80-200 & 17-55 in anticipation of a 24-70 and 70-200vr
now i'm told 24-70 are still hard to come by &
i could pick up a 70-200 in a blink but it has issues with d3(vignetting)
name is on a list for a 24-70 & trying to be patient .. |

I have the 28-70 f2.8 and the 70-200 on our rental site. If you want to try them out, send me a PM and we can work a discount.

Which lens to get? Both of course!
The 18-135 sucks. Based on the images one gets from it.
So you'll love the 24-70. But for portraits the 70-200 is THE lens, and it's great for sooo much more and covers a range you don't have now.
Problem is, you get the 24-70 you can sell the 18-135 and keep on shooting, and pay for some of the new lens.
You get the 70-200 you'll need the shorter range, but will be quickly dissatisfied with the IQ of the cheaper lens and have to get the 24-70.
So the only solution is to get both.
