OK. So I'm gonna start the thread just because of my proximity to the events. For the record I'm not for or against homosexuality as an institution or in anyone else's personal practice. I have my belief system and anyone that gives a fine, hairy rat's rear is welcome to ask; I'll share. This is just in reference to the idiotic legislation that was inacted in the town where I grew up.

On with the show:
I was born and raised in Rhea County, TN. At the last county commission (the board of elected officials that run the county) one of the commissioners decided to make a motion that homosexuality would be outlawed within the county. Hey, it must just not be enough to outlaw civil recognition of unions between same sex couples. This elected official decided he wanted everyone out. Well, at least there are 7 other elected officials from all over the county who could tell him that he's just a little overboard on this one. Nope. All 7 voted unanimously to ban people who practice a homesexual lifestyle from the county confines. Ahhhh, my birthplace.

Keep in mind that this is also the location that was home of the Scopes "Monkey Trial" almost a century ago. Well, I moved out years ago (live about an hour away) so I expect to see a major influx of male interior decorators and painters as well as female truck drivers and lumberjacks into my current hometown.

Just thought I'd point it out as it was on the Earlier Today show this morning and I actually lived in that town for over 20 years. Yeah, they have electricity and wear shoes most of the time but occasionally some people get bassackwards and just don't know when to come in out of the rain.

you are right that is very sad. I don't have an opinion on gays one way or the other but I do believe they have rights too. I am sure right now some gay living in that area is seeing all the wonderful $$$$$ that the county commissioners just gave him. All I can say is gays are considered a minority and being such, a nice little lawsuit is sure to happen with backing from several civil rights groups.

What's sad is that people even have to talk about this. Maybe if we just stopped labeling and pigeon-holing people, and instead related to them as individuals, you wouldn't feel the need to make a post such as this. With that said, what does this have to do with photography?

What's sad to me is that elected officials are so out-of-touch with the modern world. It's scary.

1.If it's not talked about, things will never CHANGE.

2.The only mistake here was that it should have been posted in the rant folder.

this really should be in the rant forum......

but I do agree that some people are just ignorant and should not be allowed to reproduce, elected officials or not.

If we could just put a stop to the "labeling" of humans based on their sexual preference, religion or cultural back ground...then maybe we could all be just a little happier together.

Not all of us are lumberjacks or truck drivers either.

Your correct LtHouseLady, silence is what kills, keeping an issue alive is what will save lives.

Remember that quote from WWII,,,

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

Annnnndddd

here's the conclusion:

After this was on national news this morning the county commission decided to have a special "called session" tonight to rescind this motion.

HAHAHAHAHA

I'm LMAO. So this was "effective" in one county for a grand total of 72 hours by the time they rescind this motion tonight.

That's the reason for posting it to any forum and talking about it. I say give everyone one a stage upon which to promote their own views and then for the REALLY idiotic ones you should turn a bright spotlight on them so that everyone can see just how impressive they really are.

Sorry about posting in the general discussion folder.

Its the country of freedom (unless you are a gay or have no money).

This reminds me of the local law that was passed to make pi = 3, rather than the irrational 3.14etc as the maths was too confusing.

That's so awesome.

I love it when someone honestly thinks something of that magnitude can be changed that easily. It's a good laugh.

edit: Oh shit, wait. It was passed? How the heck does that happen? You can't just change math. Is it still around?

Things will get really interesting when they repeal the Law of Gravity.

Or maybe we can find an "activist" judge who will just declare it unconstitutional on the grounds it has an undue and disproprotionate influence on heavy people.

Maybe I'll send this to BBspot.com and see if they can work it up into a real story ....

pi does equal 3, it's in the bible so it must be true:

2 Chronicles 4: He made a bronze altar twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide and ten cubits high. He made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from rim to rim and five cubits high. It took a line of thirty cubits to measure around it.

A father watched his daughter playing in the garden. He smiled as he reflected on how sweet and innocent his little girl was. Suddenly she just stopped and stared at the ground. He went over to her and noticed she was looking at two spiders mating.
"Daddy, what are those two spiders doing?" she asked.
"They're mating," her father replied.
"What kind of spider is that?" she asked.
"That's a Daddy Longlegs." Her father answered.
"And the other one?" the little girl asked.
Her father replied, "Both of them are Daddy Longlegs."
The little girl thought for a moment, then took her foot, stomped them flat, and said..... "Well, that might be OK in California and Massachusetts... but we're not having any of that in Texas!"

Nancy, I agree with your response. However, my point wasn't that people shouldn't talk about it. It was that it's sad that we even feel a need to discuss it. Your elipses eliminated my statement that underscored that point.

Also, I do feel that, while this is an interesting topic, it really has nothing to do with the purpose of DPChallenge, -- at least as I understand that purpose. There are plenty of socio-political forums out there where this would be more appropriate. ....Then again, maybe this is what Drew et al intended with the Rant forum??

Len,

I'd be happy if someone with the authority and ability would move this over to the rant forum. It was my mistake in posting it to the general discussion originally. I just can't make that change.

My apologies Len. Probly hadn't had enough coffee yet this morning & didn't pick up on that the way it was worded.

I mean the law that was passed that said pi equals 3 instead of 3.14.....

Is it not funny to watch someone read their horoscope after listening to them accuse others of stereotyping.

The motion has been overturned - that's great news.
Even if there wasn't a public outcry I think there would have been strong grounds for prosecuting the council under Human Rights Legislation - if there is any in place.
Sorry, maybe this is a boring post by me but I initially got so angry with the topic I was going to write a massive mail. Now that the law's been overturned I won't waste my breath!
Very sad that at least 7 people found it necessary to create the law in the first place though.

Don't know the validity of this site, but this article seems reasonably well researched:

Did a state legislature once pass a law saying pi equals 3?
