PC World has come up with their Top 5 best SLR cameras. The Canon EOS 40D was number two.

Which camera was #1? View the article.

no D3, no 1ds mk3, no 5d... strikes me as a load of crap.

I'm not in disagreement with the choice of the E-510. That was what I was considering until I ran into a steal of a deal on a Canon Rebel. Not the "best" if you are comparing to the more expensive models, but in relative terms, an awful lot of bang for the buck.

And as far as PC world's qualifications, they may not be a Photo rag, but I have no doubt that they have some qualified camera geeks on staff.

What? There's nothing wrong with that list...well, except that they got #1 & #5 backwards. :-D

Hurrah, go Olympus! ;)

Hmmm...

This:

"...so you can shoot like a pro"

Says a lot! They obviously conducted their test on consumer grade SLRs.

PC world sell PC's. They happen to sell a couple of cameras too. You couldn't walk in to PC world and Buy an "L" lens for a Canon, so they don't really count, and I wouldn't value their opinion....

Define 'best'?
A Rolls Royce is best if high price matters, or would that be a $500 beater? If performance counts the Nissan Skyline/GTR is the winner, or is the Toyota Prius ... depends on what YOU consider best, acceleration or gas mileage.

They're probably slanting it toward consumers, price and features being paramount perhaps...No list would make everyone happy, but it's interesting to see 2 Oly's on the list and no pentax.

As a general rule, don't rely on any reviews by anyone who isn't knowledgeable about what they are reviewing. I once made the mistake of buying a digital Point-and-Shoot that was highly recommended in an article in The Wall Street Journal. Let's just say they should stick to financial reporting!

Wow... E-510 is the best? I'm sure it's perfectly capable, but nowhere near the best.

Plus, the fact that every camera publication on the known face of the Earth says that the D300 is the best semi-pro camera ever created and this article has both the E3 and the 40D above it pretty much discounts and credibility. Oh well, they're writing for people who probably don't even know what a shutter speed does.

Well at least the D300 made the list, I would have had some choice words to say if it had not.

That said, everyone has a different idea of best. For example, the highest MP camera right now is the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III with 21mp. However it is "only" a full-frame sensor, meaning compared to any other full-frame sensor at 12 or 10mp, it will have more noise and less dynamic range. I'm sure a lot of photographers love that camera, personally I love mine and the only other camera I would consider would be the D3 :)

Also lists of 5 items broken into 5 pages is teh suck! :)

No, I think that the mistake was with numbers 1 and 2. :-(

510 No.1 LOL LOL LOL

Your right about that les. I'm not a die hard canonite, but no way is the 510 better than a 40d. I should buy that copy and check to see how many olympus ads are in it.

So your not counting the 22mp, 31mp and 39mp Hasselblad's or 22mp, 28mp and 38mp Leaf AFi series then as digital cameras.

No, I was not. They are not listed on dpreview, nor do many dpcers appear to own them only 4 total. :)

They are also medium format, which makes my point about 21mp being too much to fit onto a 35mm sensor despite actually selling lol :)

We could try to find out how many MP the supposedly non-existent government spy satellites are using. Then again the Hubble telescope is only .650 MP. lol
