I'm all ready to push the big button to order Nikon's Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX. I figured before I dump that much $$ into a lens, I'd check to be sure I'm making a wise move.

I intend to use this as an upgrade to a Tamron lens that I have. I plan to use this as my main wedding lens, for portraits, etc. It gets great reviews and is said to be very sharp, and that's what I'm looking for. With the D300's 12 MP, I can see how the quality of the Tamron has little shortfalls when I look at its shots at 100%.

Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone had strong feelings about this lens, or if there is something else I should be looking at in the same price range that might have extra features, like VR for example.

I use and love this lens - it's rarely off the front of my camera :) It's sharp, low distortion, very quick to focus (on my D80 - can't see it being slower on new kit ;))

Cons - expense (can't think of any other lens in the same ball-park focal lengths anywhere near as expensive) and size / weight. It is a big and chunky piece of glass! It does help you look the part... Also lack of VR - not too much of a limitation as it's a nice fast lens. Bearing in mind Nikon have just released their kit 18-55 lens with VR added I would not be at all surprised if a 17-55 2.8 VR was in the offing in the not too distant future. Being fair - this is probably less of a limitation with the D300 than the D80 due to the better high ISO performance.

This lens was an upgrade from Sigma's 18-50 2.8 - main plus points of the Nikon glass were the extended zoom range (amazing how much difference the 17 makes over the 18, less so at the long end) and quicker (all but instant) focussing.

Hope this helps!

Isn't this the one Manny Librodo uses?

I have this lens (bought it at the same time as I got the D300). Have to say, I love it. It has become my lens of choice for most of what I do. But, it is pretty heavy and as a consequence I have noticed things not being quite as sharp as I would like, due most likely to my inability to hold it absolutely steady. I would love it with VR!!!

I didn't know what I was missing until I bought it. Now I wouldn't swap it (except for the VR version!) for anything.

It seems to get good results for all the above dpc-ers.
I've had pretty good results, since I got it recently.

ADDED: I bought this to replace my slower, kit lens:"Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED." If you can get enough light to get higher THEN 1/60s handheld, then they are sharper. The zoom range is very good, for portraits or whole body shots.

Cool... thanks for the info! I'm looking forward to getting it ordered later tonight, once B&H starts accepting orders again.
