Anyone else ever get inspired by a photo they see here, and go out and recreate it? I liked Wave Watching so much that I had my oldest son (not another child pic!) run around the surf for a while until I could basically copy Manic''s photo.

Of course my ocean isn''t nearly as interesting, and the sun is too bright in mine, so it doesn''t have that flat, moody feel of the original, but I kinda like it. (Plus, I could photoshop in a pseudo-polarized filter effect in the sky!)

Thanks, Manic!

I liked Arni's and Gordon's photos from the people challenge so much that I was inspired to try using negative space for my black and white entry.

I definately would not call that plagiarism. The word should be "inspired". That is a great shot welcher and I am sure it is even more special because it is your child.

Yeah, I was just being kinda self-depricating with the plagiarism phrase. Although mine is a lot closer to plagiarsim than Kimbly's! She was "inspired by", I basically "recreated"!

Yeah, but I actually submitted mine and therefore implicitly took credit for it :) I know everything's been done before, blah blah, so it's not actually doing something wrong to look at someone else's work and say "oh cool, I want to try that". But I did want to give them a bit of recognition for their ideas.

Heh, and my shot was ''inspired'' by a very similar one hanging in the Chicago Museum (Gallery?) of Contempory Art...

Nearly all of my entries have been more or less influenced/ inspired by
photographs I''ve seen in the past, at least as a starting point. Some
are just more obvious than others (e.g., Absolut or Westonised are obvious rip-offs, the Lone Star one is a clear ''postcard'' shot etc)

Mine have had no inspiration what so ever.

i finally found the photo again that inspired me for my orange symphony shot. i do like the original inspiration better, but am quite happy with my photo, too.

Welcher, your shot is outstanding ... I like it better than your original inspiration, whether you do or not. So, great job :)

Why thanks. I've actually grown pretty fond of it, too. Did a little more work on it (scaled back the fake polarized sky a bit) and am having it printed 8x10 to hang up.

This site has really, REALLY rekindled my interest in photography. Thanks a ton!

I completely agree! My parents got me my digital camera 2 years ago because at school, a friend worked for www.collegeclub.com and they gave their employees those massive digicams that you had to use floppy disks for. Anyway, I often used it to help her take pictures and just fell in love with it. So my ''rents got me my Olympus.. but all I ever did was take snapshots .. and occasionally tried weird photos (check my gallery and you''ll see what i mean) but only on automatic.

But this site came into my life ;) And now i''m actually using my settings, learning what does what.. more light, less light.. slow shutter.. etc etc. I''m like a little kid. I take a cool shot and go running to my bf "Lookie what i did!!" hee. I''m sucha dork.

I like how this site has a cozy and personal feeling to it. There are a lot of voters and a lot of submitters, but I''ve noticed a handful of ''em post and I like that. It doesn''t feel cold and corporate. Your voice is heard, not lost.

blah blah blah, I got too serious. This place is COOL ;)
