Tragic end to a Canon 5D

I saw this was a group in Utah and thought of our folks that are out in Moab right this moment. Be careful everyone!

A moment of silence for our fallen comrade.

Oh god I think I am going to be sick, I'm never leaving the house with my camera, no sir, I've learned my lesson. Shots through the window and studio shots only from now on.

Its unfortunate but at the same time this is why you have insurance and hard cases. You wouldn't go on a canoe trip without a water tight hard case, so why would you go climbing through that sort of terrain without a hard case?

You wouldn't?!? I've done it several times now!!! (smacks forehead)

I'm totally amazed, after all the scary places that I've taken my equipment, that I haven't lost it all. I've dropped and broken my brand spankin' new Canon 70-200 2.8L IS lens. That was a tummy churning moment. Luckily I had purchased a warranty on it that covered "everything". (which has long since lapsed, so I should be more careful now)

Look into a rider on your homeowners. Very cheap and paid off in spades for me...

I came darn close to losing my camera in the Potomac River en route to my current best-scoring photo. Watching that video brought tears to my eyes. Anyone got a hanky?

I really need to look into it also. There is no way I can afford to replace my D300 and single lens as it is. After a few years and I have several lenses oh crap.

Thanks, David

We are being careful. Greg has even held onto my "tail" of my camera bag to keep me from blowing off the edge.

This just emphasizes the need for care.

My gear goes into the field in a Pelican case... unless I'm on a snowboard, but snow tends to be softer than rock.

I just assumed from the thread title that Doc had killed another one... :-)

That guy was damn lucky he wasn't blown away with the camera bag. As for the 'rescue' mission - as far as I'm concerned that's madness. I guess some people are just braver than others.

How so? They looked knowledgeable and well equipped for a roped descent...

I concur; for those folks it didn't seem like a big deal at all. I've hung out with climbers, and this didn't look like such a major thing to me. But what do I know?

I agree, they looked quite knowledgeable and I imagine that based on where they were, scrambling on rocks was what they were doing when they weren't shooting.

Besides, if by some miracle of chance the camera survived leaving an intact functional 5D laying there for the rattlesnakes would be criminal. If anything he had to at least get the memory card out of the thing. (Assuming IT survived). I think there's also some morbid curiousity when your gear dies such a dramatic death.

That video was about 7 minutes too long.

I had to go check my camera bag just to make sure it wasn't mine after all...
