So one shall post an image that will work even at negative image? And we shall not post process the shot into negative right?
04/09/2008 10:22:54 AM · #5
Arghh.. I know I saw something once and declared that it would be a brilliant negative image.. Now I can't remember what it was.. I know when the challenge'll end it'll be staring right back at me..

Actually, the description says that negative can be acheived through post-processing, so you can shoot something and then change it to negative. For instance, your shot of the church against the sky (Heaven and Earth) would probably make a great negative.

So what makes a good negative image? Are there certain colors we should try to get? I'm kind of at a loss of what to do here. I've tried to looking for a tutorial and I can't find anything very interesting. I wouldn't really know how to vote on this challenge either. Any suggestions?

I ran a couple of the successful images from the original challenge through photoshop, i.e. I de-negatived them, to see which colours work and which don't. Turns out that a nice sunset orange turns into a nice rich blue, for example.

Take a look in the first challenge on this topic Negative

There are some very interesting ideas there.

Absolutely! My photo was done in basic.

A simple convert to negative (or the equivalent) is legal.

Don King.

Seriously, my strategy has been to try negative on photos I've already taken and see what works and what doesn't. Now I'm planning a few reshoots.

I don't like how people look in negative. Unless I see something really original or intriguing, I'm not likely to score those very high.

Also, I think the best negative images are the ones that don't look "negative" at all, but just look transformed -- i.e. if you didn't know it was a Negative Image challenge, you'd wonder how it was done.

does anyone know how to make this conversion in iPhoto?

CTRL+I, or just go Image>Adjustments>Invert

I'd assume you are looking for a similarly worded action in iPhoto: Invert

In CS3, in curves, there is a pre-set pull-down. There are two different pre-set options for negatives. I'm having a lot of fun with it today with some old pictures.

Looking at ssocrates' link to past challenge is most useful in seeing possibilities of what can work. I often look at negatives of my pictures to see what shows up, and to get another assessment of light and dark balance. Useful exercise too in learning what the eye is accustomed to seeing as opposed to the nuts and bolts of what is really there. Colour negatives really tricky/trippy, but you can play with the colour. Tend to agree with bvy about the final result not really looking like a negative, but I am prepared for exceptions.

This is a lot harder than it looks.. haven't figured out how to get a decent conversion as yet.

i ended up liking this shot so much i got a large print of it for my wall here at work...

I think part of the trick is to envision before you shoot. For example, shadows that we don't even notice in the "positive" can look totally strange and very distracting when inverted. I've been trying to visualise just what my idea will look like inverted, and trying to figure out what I need to change (and how) to get the final result I want.

I doubt I'll be successful, but it's a great chance to learn! :)

Wow, that really works. When I say the best negative images don't look negative, per se, they just look stunning, alien, surreal, funny or otherwise intriguing, this is a good example of what I mean. Negative should be a means to an end, not an end in itself. Can't wait to see what you bring to the challenge.

Right bvy: should have said "not just" looking like a negative.

Hey everyone, it has been a few years since i have been around but im back and i just got my new d300. My question is this for this challenge are we allowed to add a color overlay? or is this against basic challenge rules.

thank you for your help.
