This month on the Sundance Channel they're airing "Lives in Focus," a documentary series spotlighting noted photographers, including:
- Helmut Newton
- Tina Modotti
- William Eggleston

Also premiering as part of the series are:
- Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Impassioned Eye
- Black, White + Gray: A Portrait Of Sam Wagstaff And Robert Mapplethorpe
- Tina Barney: Social Studies
- Peter Beard: Scrapbooks From Africa And Beyond

Check your listings, I know the Helmut Newton doc is airing a couple of times this weekend.

Meanwhile, if you can stand all the commercials, set your Tivo over to
the Ovation channel this Sunday (3/30/2008).

Eggleston's interview in the 'genius of photography' was wild. From what I can tell he was a bit of a partier in his youth - and still can knock it back.

The Genius of Photography was on BBC2 (UK terrestrial TV) at the end of last year. It is excellent. The companion book is also a good read.

I just skip over them during playback on my DVR. :-)

Thanks for the shows and show times. I'm definitely going to record them.

Ive been watching the Genius of Photography.

Does anyone else find the commentary analyzing the artist real annoying? I can't stand to listen to these academic folks talk.

I think that sometimes there really isn't any hidden deeper meaning to a photograph and that if the artist were alive and sitting on the set of this show they would just tell the academics to STFU.

The one last night was the portrait of the woman standing in front of her weather boarded house during the depression. It was a spectacular image, but it could of been an image of anyone in the south during the depression and the academics talk and talk about the deeper meaning of her look.

To me it was a well composed portrait that told a story of a significant period in American history.

I don't have TiVo or such, but I managed to catch most of the Helmut Newton documentary and also a bit of the Peter Beard one. I also have seen the "Close Up: Photographers at Work" twice now. It profiles five photographers: Gregory Crewdson, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Albert Maysles, Andrew Moore and Sylvia Plachy.

One interesting thing about Maysles is that he strolled the streets with his point and shoot digital camera, "chimping" and still getting good photos. I loved that!

Being cable-less, I miss great stuff like this.
Any chance you can get back and post any info they might provide on getting DVDs?

I can't complain too much about the lack of cable, though - OPB (Oregon Public Broadcasting) does show "Travels To The Edge With Art Wolfe" on one of it's HD channels :D
