At least it's spring here in the Northern hemisphere. I know it's definitely spring when I see red-winged blackbirds, and the local sugar maples start to sprout aluminum pails and spigots.

I agree on the aluminum cans, its funny to see the maple trees sprout them. The other thing that means spring to me is my first siting of a heron after winter. And that has already happened as well.

Same here! We had the worst weather of the "winter" on Tuesday/Wednesday this week. Still the sun is shining today, so that's a step in the right direction, even if the ground is totally white.

When the Robins start coming around, it's spring!

Edit to add...this is from last year. Spring hasn't hit Michigan yet. We had 2 inches of snow last night. I'm waiting impatiently.

Spring is here when the potholes suddenly become "Bottomless" and you get to see all of those wonderful cigarette butts in the area adjacent to most office building entrances. :O)

Our roads are more pothole than road.

I know it's spring when the ground thaws, ice fisherman start falling through the ice and mud season starts.

Its spring here in NC when the pine tree pollen is so thick you can taste it (yuck!) We had robins here since the 1st. of Jan. and the Canada Geese year round. The azelas and red buds are blooming now, so its starting to look much better. Just wish we had some rain to wash the %$@* pollen away!

Ahh, you must be further east than me. Nothing has bloomed except a few stray wild flowers. :)

To the original questions -- when the dogwoods bloom. :) And I start sneezing.

For me the first sign of true spring is the day the morning sunlight goes from the harsh winter glare, to the warmer (color wise) tones. I've marked this day on the calender for about the past six years. Interestingly, six years ago it happened on March 12th, the past two years it has been February 12th. The intervening years it ranged from February 20th to March 5th.

Signs of spring are showing here, Sand Hill Cranes are starting to return from their migration, Still waiting to see a Robin which is usually the thing that convinces me that spring is here. Right now it is too cool out and we still have piles of snow scattered about.

In the Pacific Northwest, Spring is here when it continues to rain but the dairy farmers start watering with diluted cattle dung in order to kick start pasture growth. The smell is horrible. On a more pleasant side, the apple and cherry trees begin to blossom in lovely shades of pink and white. We've been lucky so far, last spring wind storms blew the blossoms away within a week of blooming. Usually its too warm for snow in march, but I woke up this morning and there was 6 inches of snow on the ground and its still coming down. Amazing!

My favorite sign is when I get to say, "Have a fun Spring break!" enthusiastically to my students as they march away, not to return the next week. The students have left now and I'm at my desk for the last 5 minutes before I start this year's Spring break!!

Hard to say. Spring starts here in late February, when the wild red plum gets its tiny pinky red buds, which open to tiny pinky white stars; then there is a long struggle up of all the bulbs, then the spectacular budding of the big leaf maple, the leafing out of ocean spray, and all sorts of other excitement. Right now the first daffodils are nearly over, and it is snowing heavily. What we really look forward to is the morning when we don't have to light the woodstove.

for us in the DC area, it's all the blossoming cherry and pear trees. My bradford pear is on the verge of peaking and my cleveland pear isn't far behind. Next will be my eastern redbud. Shortly after that would have been my pink dogwood, but that got an infestation last year and was killed (same thing that killed my kanzan cherry a couple years ago, which I replaced with the redbud). Replacing the dead dogwood this year will be a more hardy crepe myrtle.

More signs of springs...local moms put their kids' training wheels on and take them out, often with big brother/sister wobbling along ahead...watch out for them!

Oh yeah almost forgot...funny sight, I should get a pic...a 16:3 hand Clyde/TB mare in heat, being courted by a Shetland pony gelding approximately 1/10 her size...*awwww*...

It's SUPPOSED to be spring here, but we just got an inch of snow with more coming down as I type. My idea of spring is NO MORE SNOW!!!!!
