New to the site. Looking into purchasing NikonD80 DSLR
Any pro or cons to this choice? Any comments on Nikon vs Cannon?
Currently have old school SLR Cannon and pocket Nikon SQ digital. Wanting to get back into photography so comments welcome

I am a avid Canon user so I don't have any experience with the Nikon D80, but I've heard many good things about it. The one area I've read that Canon, at least until this recent round of upgrades, outperforms Nikon is in image quality at higher ISOs.
The two factors that go into a new dslr purchase are current equipment and budget. If you haven't already bought into a system then I'd let budget drive your decision. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice...Nikon or Canon as there are VERY satisfied customers of both.

Hey Julie... welcome to the site!
As I'm a Canon user, I'll stay out of the D80 debate (have no experience there). Check here for similar past threads. There seems to be a lot of discussion on D80 vs. used D200. I'm sure the Nikon-faithful will chime in on that.
The Canon vs. Nikon debate is always a hot topic - just keep in mind that whatever you choose, it will be a great learning experience. The SLR-to-DSLR migration will open up all kinds of new territory for you.

Why not do side by side feature comparisons on dpreview? There's lots of good information on that site.
Also, having a clear list of what features you can't live without will go a long way in helping you decide.
... and before you lay down the money, find a shop that has all the models you're considering and handle them. The one you'll use is the one that feels best in your hands (re: controls etc). |

If you already have Canon lenses, then a Canon digital SLR body would make sense so you can take advantage of that previous investment. But like someone mentioned, the one which feels comfortable in your hands and has controls you can control is probably the best choice overall. |
