How about a new feature for the website which showed where abouts you would finish with your current score.
It would simply be a list which showed you what the average finishing score was for each placement , so during the challenge you could see where abouts you would finish with that score.
eg.
1st- 6.85
2nd- 6.72
3rd-6.52
etc...
maybe this is not necessary, but I was just interested in other peoples views on it. |

I second this. Maybe have it show the percentiles all the way down to last place. i.e.:
25th %ile score
50th %ile score
75th %ile score
I'm not sure I'd want to know *exactly* where I stand - might be a little too depressing! But it would be nice to know roughly where the scores were falling in a given challenge. |

This was mostly recently discussed here.
It takes a while at midnight when the results are being calculated, not sure if that's just from generating the result webpages or actually removing the 'scrubber' votes or working out the placements. I wonder if a feature that will update your score AND your placement with the other XXX submissions would significantly slow down the page? There are some people who likely update every minute, and would update even more often if they thought they were going to be in the top 10.

Maybe just adding a first-middle-last into the score window. That will allow user everytime they update to see their score, the score of the first place, (at this moment) the score of the middle ranking photo and the score of the last photo.
ex.
1st 6.8504
middle 4.9263
last 2.2475

That would be good, because then it only has to be calculated once for everybody. Its just a question if the 'higher-ups' want to put it on.

I would prefer a simple running:
25th Percentile = score
50th Percentile = score
75th Percentile = score
that updated once per hour if computation is difficult, as previously pointed out, it would be the same for everyone. This would be enough to tell me how badly (or well) I am doing in relative terms and would leave the excitement for the end of the contest because I would have no idea what Blue or Brown ribbon scores might be.
I'd even be willing to trade the live update for an hourly update plus percentiles if that eased the coding or computation burden.

Bad idea in my opinion.
For example - If you were 2nd in a non-member challenge with an hour to go, there would be a big temptation to get all your friends to sign up and give you 10. Less likely when you don't know how you are doing |

I agree with belco, I think it would be a bad idea as well. Lets say your close to the top ten but not there yet. Would you end up going back and looking at your votes maybe voting some a little lower then before.
I think the temptation would have people doing just that.

The average vote (overall*) updated along with your average* scores would be cool.

Personally, I already think this is a problem (and it is commonly called "the self-serving voter"). The idea being that people see that their entry is only getting a "5.8", they think their picture is better than most of the entries, so when they vote, the highest score they give is a 5.
Compared to other "real world" competitions, I think the situation here at DPC is unique in that competitors can vote on each other's pictures while having knowledge of what their current score is. As an analogy, this would be like the contestants in the Miss America pageant voting on their competitors performance (instead of a panel of judges), while being able to see their current score (instead of having it hidden until the winner is announced).
I've suggested in the past that scores should be hidden until you've clicked an "I've finished voting" button. This would only be available after you've reached the 20% minimum, so somebody who submits and never votes wouldn't get to see their score until the results were computed (which should encourage more participants to vote). After "locking in" your votes, you could see your scores update as usual, and you would still be able to go back and comment, of course. With that change, I wouldn't have a problem with "additional statistics" being shown. But I personally feel that adding additional statistics with the way things currently work would only make the self-serving voting problem worse. |

Look at how addicted people are now to the update button and how many people wait for the first hour of competition to see where their first scores fall. Well if that's a problem don't show scores at all until challenge is over. Simple. (edit Before someone sends me a bomb threat, I'm kidding.)

There are always issues with "change". I agree that might be an issue, but I really don't know if the time people spent voting would change that much. I procrastinate, so I usually end up voting on the last day. Having such a feature would certainly encourage me to vote early, but it wouldn't want to make me "blow through" the entries just to see my score.
I still think the idea has more positive effects than negative and would remove one big "anomaly" in the DPC voting process. |
