I was going to catch a flick tonight, but it's $9 at all the theaters around town. There is NO way they have to charge $9 to make a profit. This is crap.

Wait until you buy the overpriced soda and popcorn.

How long has it been since you went to a movie?

As has been stated, the price of entry is only the start. Once you add snacks your movie will cost you around $20.

This is why I like Redbox.

When Silver City first opened, several years ago, they were charging $12 while everyone else was $6 or less. Their rationale was that the theater alone was an experience, even without the movie. Wasn't long until their prices dropped drastically!

And then we have the Roxy Cinegog, built in '49 in an army-surplus Quonset hut, that shows double- and triple- features for $5. I LOVVVVVE the Roxy! It's a local icon :D

eta; oooh, I see they're showing "The Bucket List" and "There Will Be Blood". Looks like I might have to fork over 5 bucks tonight :)

HAHAHAA you are just now finding this out??? When was the last time you went to the movies??? They are more than $9 here.

You can catch a matinee for like 4 bucks or so which is pretty good I guess if you like that movie theater experience.

I personally like my Netflix movies. I have a surround sound system that I put together that would blow the doors off of a movie theater. I actually had the neighbor from 2 doors down come over one night and asked if I could turn it down because it was shaking everything in her house. HAHAHA But I only get to do that when the kids aren't sleeping, NASCAR is awesome to listen too, sounds like your right there are the track.

Anyway there are some sites that offer discounts on movie tickets, I can't remember which right now but some times Dealsea.com will post where they are.

When I go to Cineplex, I use the coupons from work ($6.50/$7.50) or I wait until the movie is at the cheap seats theatre, $3.00. Sometimes even go there for a 2fer so it's only $1.50.

And so are most of the movies they're charging those prices for.

Just save your money and buy a big @$$ TV like me....

$600 for the projector and $89 for the screen.

Depending on whether they accept my student card or not, mine charges £7.80 ($15.80) ;) Id be pretty happy with $9! :D

It's $11.50 here. We stopped going to movies a long time ago and now we rent DVD's. We've got a big screen tv and it is much more comfortable staying home.

I wish we had a cheap seats theater, or an old school movie theater that showed double features of old flicks for cheap. I'm just really annoyed that it's so much money for a movie, and like everyone mentioned, for popcorn, candy, etc.

Whew, I'm glad out got that rant out. I just needed to hear from others that movie prices are rediculous.

Some movies just need to be seen on the biggest screen possible. Star Wars or Indiana Jones type movies just wouldn't cut it in a small theatre on a smaller screen.

This is an interesting blog on why you pay so much for a movie. Reading what he had to say he echos what an acquaintance of mine who worked in the theater business had to say about the industry and prices. I pretty much only go to he movies for the big blockbusters that I can't wait until they come out, everything else waits until DVD or cable.

some days I forget how lucky I've got it here. $8 a movie, beer brought to you throughout the show, anyone on a cell phone gets thrown out.

Haha - I thought that you were exclaiming how cheap that was. I can easily pay £12 ($25) for a ticket and another £7 ($15) for popcorn and a soft drink in central London.

We tend to view most of our movies by borrowing them from the library...

$9!!!!!!! Yikes! It has been a while since I have been to a *normal* movie theater. I pay $2.50 for the theater on base. I am not a huge fan of going to the movies, though, so Netflix gets my business :)

Typically, the average film has a percentage take for the studio around 95%.

So, all the money from the ticket goes to the studio, the studio declares zero (or negative) profits from the movie, director and writer goes unpaid (a 5% of a 0 is still a 0) and you pay $10 for a popcorn.

The movie theater is an experience and really it can not compare with a projector and 150cm (60in) screen (which I do have). Have you ever been in a movie theater alone? Not gone there without a companion but be in the theater alone? the only person there seeing the movie? That feel does not compare to a home theatre (not that I'm saying you should watch the movie alone - it's just an experience that someone should go through.. at least once).

Fortunately here where I am there's still a theater which is used by a film club on a weekly basis with movies that otherwise would go unnoticed for about 3.5 euro ($5) - normal prices in a multiplex is 7.5 euro ($11). If someone makes it even for $5 without commercials and stupid warnings why others have to charge double? for the privilege of having you wait 15min until the movie starts?

Anyway, enough of ranting.. I have a movie to watch this evening (in the theater).

-n.

It costs me $50 to take my family to the movies if we get any snacks there. We only go a couple times a year anymore.

Hell it's been $9.00 for over a year out here in Vegas. It's the popcorn & other goodies that get you.

Just $9. You're getting away cheap.

Movie night costs:
Babysitter: $10/hour for 5 hours = $50
Dinner for 2: $60
Movie tickets for 2: $18

Almost $128 for me and my wife to have a night out. We don't dare to buy popcorn, we sneek our own.

We only do this once-in-awhile. Otherwise, we use netflix

Once in a great while we'll take our boy to see a Disney movie at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. $25 a ticket which includes popcorn, a drink, reserved seats, and no line, plus they usually have fun activities for the kids. That's Hollywood for you.

Actually, a matinee for an adult is 6.50 here.
