a little over a year and a half ago my wonderful hubby decided to build me my very own computer. acording to him it was going to be the best computer ever built and he was building it strictly for my photography. so he got all the good graphics cards,yada yada...and more yada. I was all excited when he said it was finally finished after 6 months of waiting. so...now i have this really cool tower with a dragon that lights up and alll kinda pretty blue lights in the fans...when i first turn it on its fast as lightning! just when i figure out how the thing works and where to put this file or that one it has its first "brain fart". over the next year my "wonderful" computer has these bran fart more and more frequently and im starting to think its actually has old hummers (pc version..lol). the computer is now on an average of once a day just shutting down and doing some kinda count down on a blue screen. if i dont let it finish counting down files ten i have to reboot it about 40 times before it works right. so i settle to let it have its little quirk and do its thing and reboot when its nice and ready (which would take just over an hour to do) then i would return to what i was doing...no harm done..whats an hour out of my week. then this thing get to doing it a few times a week...ok...ive grown acustomed to this so i bear with it. ten it gets to doing this a few times a day! ok..im starting to get really PO'd. I threaten hubby to fix it before i throw it out the door..he tinkers a bit and says "its fixed...it was..yada yada". so i go about doing my editing and a few days later (when he is away on work in another state) it does it again...so i do what any good woman does...I yell at him. the way i see it is he built the POS so its his fault it isnt working. Ive dealt with the computer in this way for a year and it finally had its last brain fart with me. I am now on my daughters laptop. I told hubby my fingers will never touch his POS again and that he will buy me a new computer asap! he quietly agreed ike a good boy but untill i can get a new desktop im down for the count photography wise. for some odd reason I cant find my photoshop disk ANYWHERE! its driving me crazy already that i cant take/edit any photos for my personal sanity. so now i am on the hunt for a hand-me-down photoshop or a really cheap one online when i have the funds to get it. Ive tried leaving comments for the critique club today but my heart just isnt in it. i would much rather be editing some photos i took the other day for st.pattys day. Its going to be close to a month before i come up with the finances for a desktop and a few more weeks to find the cash for photoshop. so untill i can get bac to editing and get my sanity back i will just be lurking....
wow..i feel alot better getting that off my chest...i really hope you all have a peaceful calm wonderful day

If you're a registered PS user, you can contact them and get replacement disks I believe...

Cher,
I'm sure he had good intentions, but you've been very patient! I hope you get a great new set up...soon. It's so hard to wait.
We started a remodeling project over 3 years ago. It's not even half done yet, although some progress was made last week after I kinda made a few pointed remarks. The work that needs done now is my turn, so I can't blame him anymore :) Hang in there!

thanks bear...but it was PS 7 and im sure its way too old for them to care.
im trying to keep my chin up...getting into portrait season so now is not the time to be down...gonna have to kick hubby in the tush and get him movin...lol |

Your husband is a better man then I, When my wife demands things of me she usually ends up doing them herself. I tend to hate being told what to do, if I am asked, No Problem just don't like it the other way around.
Have you considered having the computer checked out at a PC store or repair service, or is it a matter of your hubbys pride ? If it is only a year old which is like dog years with computers but still pretty new techology, It might be worth it to have everything tested properly. Sounds like a software and or hardware conflict to me.

| Sounds like your tower has a virus, bad board, maybe bad ram or just dirty inside. Has he taken it apart and used forced air on the inside? Ran a virus scan? Got all the updates from windows update? BTW be careful editing on a laptop, you may get posturazation in your images, lots of laptops have crappy screens and do not show all the colors... |

pride is his biggest issue. im complained and complained and begged for a new computer and i was told " I can fix it" even after i said "why dont we take it to someone"... I even tried doing research and talking to people inthe bizz to see if i could figure out whqat it is...ive come up with: it has it all...virus, both software and compatiability issues not to mention that i also think hes installed incorrect drivers for at least one hardware....
old hummers is the pc version of what people in the suth call "old timmers" which prolly translates into english as alzheimer's.
bugz...i have been nice..for way too long. was even nice after he took all my drives out of my WORKING compaq and put them in the POS computer. I have dealt with this issue since jan of 2007.no more mrs.nice guy.
golden...i know about editing on the laptop..but a girls gotta do something with her time AND stay outta trouble. photography is my only outlet..heeeheeee |

I never touch my wife's computer. Actually, I never touch anybody's computer. I'm a computer guy. I know better.
Building your own computer is like building your own car. You can have the best parts and have the fastest computer/car around, but you have to maintain it.
You have to be able to troubleshoot it and switch parts out when they go bad.
For my wife, she just has a Dell she uses for work. When it goes bad, somebody comes by and fixes it. If she upgrades, someone comes by and installs the parts.
I'd highly suggest you get some sort of prebuilt system from a company that'll maintain it (Dell, HP, IBM, Mac). It'll improve your marrage. |

If only our IT department at work supported upgrades. "More RAM? No way. 512MB should be enough to run Pro-Engineer. Besides, if we gave you an upgrade, everyone would want one."

Cher when you start PS your activaction code is on that splash screen. When it comes up hit the print screen button and wait until PS loads completely. Once it does select >file > New and then CTRL+V to paste the screen capture there. Write down your activation code so you have it.
If you are going to uninstall PS and reinstall it you don't even need a disk. All you have to do is go to ftp://ftp.adobe.com/ and find the file you are looking for. In this case it's going to be photoshop 7 correct? Well here you go

That is straight from Adobe's site.

My PC has been unmounting the card reader and shutting off or rebooting with increasing frequency for a couple of weeks, and slowing down to what feels like 1KHz (instead of GHz). So far, it's been running without problems for nearly 24 hours, since I sucked all the dust out of it yesterday. |

That is a good thing that dust will gaum (appalachian word) it up every time.

Sucked? Did you vacuum it? The wife's puter has been acting up and I was going to clean it out to see if that hepled. Not big on blowing air to just blow dust around.

I believe Paddy is a nickname for Patrick somewhat unique to Ireland.
Whatever, it's as good a reason as any to wear green and drink a few pints. |

Yes, I used a portable vaccum cleaner, sometimes with a special attachment* with skinny hose/tools to reach into tight places.
Although, the computer repair guy I talked to first actually recommended taking the computer outside and using the vaccum cleaner (with a clean bag) to blow the dust out instead of trying to suck it out. I couldn't do that in this situation though.
*Kit is/was made by Oreck, but I can't find it in their online store. |

Duct tape and plastic tubing?
Have you tried a "defragment the hard drive" or do windows computers still have that to do for maintenance? I'm in the dark about newer windows computers, having used a Mac for the last few years.
