I am looking for digital photography books for beginners and how to take the right shots with the right lighting. I am wanting to know how to get those professional shots. If anyone can recommend books that would be nice ..thank you

A lot depends on what you like to shoot, but there's a lot that's general as well. Photography is a blend of the art (composition, lighting, etc.) and the technical (understanding the camera and how settings affect the result). The artistic side is basically a process of "seeing" a compelling photo, that is, to imagine the end product when you look at a scene. The technical side is executing the shot to realize your goal. On the artistic side, this book may be of help. On the technical side, start with your camera manual, and then experiment. Also, any general book on photographic technique, whether it be film-based or digital, should suffice.
Finally, remember that post-processing is your "digital darkroom" and that some work in post is almost always required to make the best of your photos. That work may be very minimal global changes, or detailed editing. Editing techniques are a whole 'nother world to explore.
DPC is a great place to learn... look over people's portfolios and review challenge results. See what works (for the DPC voter) and what doesn't. Often the photog will include some information as to how the shot was achieved. Try to figure out *how* they achieved the result they did, including how the shot was lit, exposed, etc.
Above all, go out and shoot, shoot, shoot. Nothing improves one's photography more than, well, photography.

Yes. I that's the one highest on my reading list for photography. Never heard about the doctoring but other people I have recommended the book to have agreed that its a good resource.

addendum to previous: You'd laugh if you saw my challenge entry this week. Its a great shot demonstrating how NOT to expose a shot. I can't remember the last time I entered a shot so terribly exposed.

Yeh, I thought something was "fishy" when I read that one ;-)

But seriously, yep, another good choice. I think so far we've spent her whole year's budget for books!

I've recommended and/or lent that one to quite a few people who all liked it. Bryan F. Peterson is the author

I've read Lighting by Chris Bucher, and at the time I found it extremely helpful - gives a good, easy to understand basic overview of lighting and exposure.
