Time to sign up for the March Walkabout – March 21-24, 2008

Time for the next Walkabout. I added a couple days on either side of the weekend again, to make it easier for more to participate.

As always, the idea is to improve our ability to see an image by forcing us to focus on, and see the beauty in, the mundane and ordinary ... or at least what we often perceive as the mundane and ordinary part of everyday life. Sometimes beauty can be found in the ordinary places or objects we walk by every day without a second glance; other times it can be in a beautiful place discovered at the end of a path we've walked by but never taken the time to walk down before.

The process is simple: Get a whole bunch of people to take their cameras out on the same weekend, walk somewhere familiar to them, and see what kind of images we come up with. Walk with your eyes wide open -- The journey is the destination.

Here's the rules:

1. The challenge should start from a place that is familiar to you, and that you regularly visit during a normal week. You should not travel to any special location for the shoot. Good starting places would be your home, your work, your school, or the grocery store where you regularly shop. The idea is to start from a familiar location that will make you look harder for something new and different to shoot. Even if you go to a place you regularly visit and photograph, try to keep yourself from making the same kind of pictures you typically shoot when you go there. Keep your eye out for the ordinary, and see if you find something extraordinary.

2. You must leave your starting place on foot. No other mode of travel is permitted. To preserve the serendipitous nature of this challenge, pictures should not be taken at your starting location, but should be taken somewhere off the premises.

3. Your pictures must all be taken between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. (local time) on a single day during the challenge period, March 21-24.

4. Advanced editing rules apply. Or not. You decide. The focus should be on the image not the processing, but if you want to layer on a texture you found on your walkabout, or share a triptych of similar subjects, go for it. It’s your challenge!

Optional Rules

Treasure Hunt – Sign of the Times
Take a photo of some kind of sign, commercial, road, notice, or whatever in a completely useless or overdone situation.

As suggested by hajeka, the winner of the January Walkabout. He'll pick the winner of this month's Treasure Hunt, who then gets to pick the treasure for the next walkabout.

November’s Personal Challenge – Put Your Camera Away
Frequently when I'm out shooting, I've got my camera in hand and am constantly scanning the horizon for pictures to take. Sometimes, our focus on photography can be too single-minded, and we miss out on the experience of where we are and, paradoxically, the images we may find there. This month, take some time to walk with your camera packed away in your bag. Listen to the sounds around you. Breathe in the air. Be part of the scene, rather than just a recorder of it. Let the picture come to you. When it does -- and it will, probably when you least expect it -- take your camera out of your bag and share what you find in your posts!

Posting & Commenting
Images should be uploaded to the March Walkabout Posting Thread.

You should post no more than five images. All images should be uploaded in a single post.

Try to include a little narrative in your post, telling us where you went, what you did, and how or why you found the images you did.

Please try to comment on as many images you can the following week (Mar. 24-30). Commenting on this challenge is as much fun as participating.

After all the entries are in, feel free to post your favorites in the Walkabout Hall of Fame thread!

Sign up in this thread if you're interested!
