Here are the statistics from my last submission -

Place: 214 out of 455
Avg (all users): 5.7192
Avg (commenters): 10.0000
Avg (camera): 5.7103
Avg (no camera): 7.0000
Views since voting: 26
Views during voting: 215
Votes: 146
Comments: 1

What I'm pointing out here is number of comments! Though from the score I can understand the submission to be average, but this is the worst score I have got in terms of number of comments. I just got 1 comment during the voting and that comments also was not of any use (I guess it was accidental though, so no issues with the commentator. And I know he/she gave me a 10! ;)).

So is this the worst ever on DPC? Are there no chances of learning from the comments? I have not seen any "commentators club" comments on my photos since ages. Or is it just this particular submissions which is hard to comment on (for whatever reasons)?

Don't know why you are complaining, there were at least 5 images in the Free Study (including mine which finished above 6.1) that got ZERO comments...

Thats exactly what I'm complaining about! :) I see comments to be learning opportunity and I don't feel good to see the numbers going down (exponentially). I know some members have been trying to improve this by commenting on all the photos (whenever possible), but its still a major downgrade from what it used to be on DPC some time (months?) back.

Just a debate on what we already know (don't we?) :)

Did you check the box below your submission?
I would like an indepth critique on my submission.

It isn't a guarantee, but it certainly is a step in the right direction.

Here is where you could make a change:

# Comments
# Made: 671
# Helpful: 576
# Received: 1,296
# Helpful: 1,063

You are getting 2 comments for every 1 you've made. Maybe get more involved and see what happens.

For what it's worth, I have images with double your views with only one comment and in my portofolio,
have many with several thousand views with no comments - no biggie.

I knew that of course; the lack of comments is really sad, on the other hand you have received twice as much comments than you have given yourself, why do youe expect the other members to be busier?

@Brad - Yes. I do click on "I would like an indepth critique on my submission" :)

@Oliver - I feel a little better on the numbers now ;) But honestly, 1 comment is little too less than what I expected. But anyway, now I know even 0 is the norm now!

I agree (without doubt) that I should myself give more comments. I have made it a practice (and hopefully a good one) to comment for every photo I vote for (maybe not every photo in challenge though). I almost have 1:4.5 ratio (Brad 1:4, Oliver 1:11 approx) for comment:vote and its improving ...

I wonder if Langdon (or someone equally omnipotent) can produce a new stat for challenges: comments per vote, or some such. I too have noticed that commenting is (or seems to be) down, and would just be curious to see if the numbers back that up. My Free Study 2008-02 entry got one comment during voting. (I still think the recent "your comments are hurting my feelings" fiasco has put some people off.)

I'm still fairly new here and my commenting record is also far from stellar, but I try to maintain two given for every one received (and hope to improve that).

PS: By the way, Tej, I have admired your work for some time. I'm still working with an older camera, and it happens to be one you that you took to new heights here a few years back -- the Olympus C-70. Seeing what the camera was capable of inspired me to try DPC in the first place, and I'm glad I did! (I do still hope to upgrade soon.)

the stat is already there.

And yes the free study of January was the worst ever free study with an average 3.7 comments per entry, and the second worst challenge of all times - though free studies often have less comments because of the higher number of entries.

Hard to say if this is a trend, because it is surprisingly volatile from one challenge (or one free study) to the other.

However, I agree that DPC (Langdon, SC, whomever) should really think about positive ways to reward comments to help out this stat, which is a very important one.

for my part, i'm a bit low in given to receive, but I try to improve it.

ETA: the worst ever was the very first challenge, "road signs" with 22 comments on 9 entries ;)

Thanks Brian for the such encouraging feedback :) And now I know I'm not the only one deprived of comments.

If you like comments, you should be entering some of the side challenges. It's a great way to meet the locals, and to share ideas and thoughts about the topic of choice for the challenge. And, a plus is that no one gets any 1's.

here are my three simple rules about commenting...

(1) i do not count on learning from comments people leave on my entries. i feel, solely relying on received comments will make me a "passive" learner than an "active" one.
Imp Note: Don't get me wrong, i accept that i learn a lot from comments and i greatly greatly appreciate every one of them. i just do not expect people to tell me every single time, when i screw up.
(2) i try to learn not only from other entries but also from other comments people leave on other entries. the treasure is out there to discover. there are thousands of images with thousands of comments already on this site alone.
(3) whenever i participate in any challenge (as you can see, not very frequently because of time constraints), i try to match the number of comments i write with the number of comments i receive. i feel that is my responsibility. even writing a simple assessment (what i noticed/liked/disliked) of photos, if not critique or suggestion, has helped me a lot.

This got 1 comment after the show ended - so don't worry about it mate! and scored lower. ;-)

Not even close to being the worst on dpc. One thing that really sticks out is the color. No offense but its has an ugly tint of color. Adds nothing to the picture and in my opinion makes it look worse. Why not keep it in color or atleast make it black and white?
03/12/2008 12:57:28 AM · #14
@Superdave - Thanks, Dave! I think I agree with the wrong choice of color and actually wrong choice of photo also. I had couple of them in my camera, from the same location, but I dont know why I chose this one. I think I was more driven by what-DPC-might-like over what I actually like :)

I don't think you chose the wrong photo, just the wrong color tint. I love the photo and the eye contact really pulls you in. I think it is a captivating image and really appeals.

I realize this isn't a challenge image but I find the sheer numbers pretty crazy. Thats what you get in the nude category I suppose. This single image has almost half the views my profile has in a couple months and I've been on the site for a number of years.

Not intending to be rude but what does this have to do with the topic of this thread?

This tread is about having a large number of views compared to low number of comments

Guess I just see it differently. It is about an image in a recently completed free-study challenge. Posted in the individual photograph discussionthread category. Asking about comments received during voting. But, hey, if you need to pimp your nudie, go right ahead.
