i havent been here for all that long,so this is the first time ive entered 3 challenges at once.from my previous entries ive only got one score over 6,so i was pretty happy when all 3 of my current entries started above 6.not so happy when they plummeted to as low as 4.9.
they are climbing SLOWLY now.it seems it only takes a few bad scores to drop fast, but it takes forever to climb back up the tiniest bit.im not complaining because i never expect to win,i just enjoy watching my score & reading(most)of the comments.im here to learn from everyone;and i have learnt a lot so far.thanks.

It does seem to take longer to climb back up but that is really just an illusion. Because the votes are averaged as soon as you get 100 votes or so it's not going to move very quickly in either direction. It's very volatile for those first 20 votes or so though.

I know exactly how you feel. I have entered a number of challenges and I'm always let down when I see the score drop sharply. It starts out doing well and I think that I have finally submitted a photo that everyone likes. Then the score starts to drop. I know that I'm not that good so I don't expect much.

There is however something that bothers me a great deal on the scoring. No matter how good any photo is there is almost always a few ones, twos, and threes. The photo could be flawless and right on topic but someone will give it a 1. I don't understand this... Are people voting 1s in an attempt to make their photo do better overall? I don't know the reason, but I rarely hand out ones. It has to be off topic and poorly executed to get a 1 from me.

I left DPC for a while because I was put off by the voting system. Mainly because that when I see a photo that is clearly the winner of a challenge it still has 2-3 ones. I have come back with a different mind set. I want to do well and get a good score, but I have to keep in mind that I'm here to learn and produce work that I'm happy with. I'm ranting...

That darn update button is both a boon and a curse. As your scores go up you start going "Yes! Yes! Yes!" and when it goes down um...well. You get the idea. Judging from what I am seeing in your entries so far I can see some real potential there. You definitely have a good eye for composition. As an aside I noticed that you like to use a small aperture (f16/f18). Not that that's a bad thing or anything but you get better sharpness with around f/8 f/11 (depending on the lens). If you were trying for greater depth of field or wanted to stop down so you could use a longer shutter speed then that's a different story altogether.
So to sum up, I think you are definitely going to get better and you're going to see a lot more 6's.

eta: Yeah I see you were actually trying to get a longer shutter speed and I only saw a few of your images when I posted originally. It just happens to be that your highest rated shots use the small aperture. Anyways...

it just seemed strange that one score dropped from 6.2 to 4.9 in the space of 17 votes.(this wasnt in the first 20 votes,i think from memory it was around the 60-70 mark).i dont see my score jumping that much in the space of 17 votes.like i said im not complaining.i dont care if i never win a non existent ribbon.

most of my long exposure water shots are done in bulb mode & using an nd8 filter(not sure if the filter has any effect on the apeture used).i let the camera set the apeture for me because i figure it knows more than i do about photography.(for that many $$$$$$$$ it bloody well should.)ive still got a LOT to learn about all this stuff.
