I have just purchased some studio lights, I have a Canon 350d . Does the CANON ST-E2 Speedlite Transmitter act as a trigger to set off the flash units????

Thanks

Peta

It's not meant to, but it can. the ST-E2 sends an IR beam that is recognized by the strobes (if they have a slave trigger, which they should usually). Now the issue is that with the 350d, the ST-E2 always works on the basis of E-TTLII, meaning it will trigger a pre-flash signal before the photo is taken in an attempt to adjust the final flash output to the required level. You'll end up with a dark photo, as the flash will have been triggered too early.

Now you can place a small piece a cardboard or whatever between the ST-E2 and the 350D connectors so that it only works in manual - ie will just send a signal to trigger the flash.

When you look at the connectors, you see 4 small ones arranged in a square and a larger, round one. You need to cover the 4 small ones - but not the large round one.

This should work (at least it does for me).

Now it will also mean that you will only trigger the hotshoe flashes on manual mode.

You can purchase an adaptor to put on the hotshoe that has a connector for the cable. When I used the 350 I always worked that way. Next advantage is, you don't have to cover the little pins, because the adaptor just has a connection to the center pin of the hotshoe

the 430 EX will be triggered in the set-up I described, but in manual mode only. Anyway, if you use the 430 alongside studio strobes, you should fire it in manual.

As I said, too dark because the pre-flash signal of the ST-E2 triggers the strobe before the photo is taken.

If you want to use cables instead, you should follow Oliver's advice.

how do you connect the ST-E2 with a cable?

You were confusing me. That was nonsense, no need to attach a cable when the ST-E2 can sit on the adaptor

Your best bet is to just get a hot shoe to PC adaptor. Or use the 430EX in manual at very low power to trigger the strobes. It'll be cheaper that way. Using it in manual takes away the preflash so you won't have the early fire issue.
