I was dissapointed with a lot of the silence entries. Seems like most ideas are done by many.

pitsman--not sure where you're going with that?

an hour and a half to vote on 300+ entries....impressive. Look a little longer, you may see more. Just a suggestion

There's a method to my madness...I vote on all when challenge first begins, then take a couple days adjusting scores and leaving comments.

What do you expect from someone who dislikes Swiss Alps and have only 1 favorite photo out of 60000 images on the site!

I sat out this contest because I really couldn't come up with a good idea for it. Still, I plan to vote on the pictures.

i don't want to bicker...I want to feel like I can say my opinion of some subpar photos and get feedback that isn't oddball or immature.
03/03/2004 02:18:37 AM · #20
i'll admit, a good deal of the pictures dont fit my interpretation of the silence theme, but if its a skillfully shot photo, im not giving it any less than a 5, and i do try to see other peoples interpretations, and i'll leave a comment if i don't understand. There sure are alot of pics of people sitting around close mouthed... silent yeah... but no feeling.

Too many Mountains (waaay to much snow) too many index fingers and superficial entries where not much thought has gone into it

Don't worry about it Gpierson, just about everyone who's read this thread I'm sure understood your point. It's expected that a few people will completely miss your point. No worries, we all know you have a life outside of DPC and you're entitled to your opinion about the challenges :-) Keep posting!

I think gpierson is right, and
pitsman, avg. of 3.4 if verry bad.
You can't tell me there is so much bad photos?

@Albertmdh
I think you are right... specaly about "the finger" part.
Way to much simillar ideas. I hought this will be
much more inpiritive challenge.
But somene said, people just want to see something that
is way obvious, and nmot giving any time to think about
the photos. and that is too bad :(

I think that my picture has emotion, and I got some good
comments. my rating is now 5.2, but I think that I deserv
more... I know that this is not tu humble, but, I took
alot of effort in this, and my model too.

Tnank you for your comments, and
your votes.
Hope the best silence wins!

Cheers!

I vote on all pics. I try to comment on at least 20%, and in COnflict i commented on 49% of the 400+ entries.

I vote, and then take what i have given high scores to and give it a 10, move the next up to 9, and 8, so on. An average shot is a 5. Most of my votes are 4 or 5. i am trying to do more 6's, so give more credit for pics that show more time/effort/skill/thought/originality.

The originality is the biggie this time. Lots of nice landscape and sunset pics. Problem being, lots. Lots of graveyard, not too many stand out from the crowd. I think that makes me a tougher critic. I try to be as fair an objective on teh 10th unplugged headphone as the first. BUT when you get 10 headphone pics (or sunsets, taped mouths, etc), all technically fine, I have a tendency to score the group of them lower - an originality penalty shall we say.

I agree with the general lack of originality here- there were quite a few 'expected' shots. Within each group, though, there are always some that obviously spent more effort or took a more original approach to the same subject. I tend to score those entries a little higher since they have the added challenge of standing out from a crowd.

I also score higher those that "focus" on the challenge rather than just happening to fall within the scope. In this case, I look at each image and try to think, "is it just silent or is it "about" silence?" The challenge was to "convey" silence- not just show a quiet scene. In my mind, an image might communicate silence without actually BEING silent. Opinions vary, of course, thus I'm on track to finish with my lowest score to date. :(

Edit- This is a pretty raucous thread given the subject matter. ;-)
