Spread out over several different threads, this has gotten a bit overwhelming for me at least. What I'd like to do with this thread is take the suggestions that people have made regarding the comment system and put them in one place. I will put down the ideas that I remember from the threads I have read.

Please expand on the ideas - I am not taking them verbatim from the original threads so if you recognize your idea, please feel free expand on it.

Also, if you have any additional ideas, please post them.

Please DO NOT debate the relative merits of the ideas. Unfortunately that just defeats the purpose of a thread like this. (If there's a new idea that comes up, I hope people will not mind creating a new thread.)

edit: I just read a locked thread where a SC member asked to keep discussion in one thread - please lock this if it is unhelpful.

SUGGESTIONS

Give photographers ability to say what types of comments they like

Submit comment for review - If a comment is unclear, submit it back to the commenter for clarification

Photographer checks a comment as offensive, certain number of people must agree in order to delete the comment.

Rating scales, not just a checkbox, for comments, (possibly with option to hide comments below a certain rating)

Ability for photographer to delete whatever comments they desire - stated by SC that this is not happening now

Ignore user ability

TOS rewrite

mandate comments on voters who rate at 3 or less

Accountability: (1) Introduce a "Photographer considers this comment to be rude" checkbox, *and* (2) Add a link to "Rude Comments" from users' profile

(hidden) tracking box

Each check box could be used cumulatively, so an image could have multiple checks (ie found helpful, would like more information and appreciated or Appreciated the comment and has given thought/disagrees).

also from that thread (although we both agreed afterwards that while the formatting was great, the wording was a bit... 'less than perfect'):

From this thread regarding allowing the photographer to indicate what type of comments they would like:

I would like to propose that there be three boxes added to the Critique Club box that might actually alleviate a few common complaints to commenting.

All comments are welcome, but:
[ ] The photographer is particularly interested in hearing comments about your reactions and feelings.
[ ] The photographer is particularly interested in hearing comments with technical specifics.
[ ] The photographer is willing to accept strongly worded and direct criticism of the photo.

If no boxes were checked, just leave it at:
All comments are welcome.

This last idea of mine could be worked into either each image or the user's general profile as a tag for the comment box. It seems that this wouldn't be too difficult since there is already a small amount of text already pre-placed in the comment box that needs to be erased when making a comment. It might help give the commenter a moment to pause and think before making the comment, and perhaps give the recipient of the comment a moment to evaluate whether their response is in keeping with their published ability to 'handle' rough comments. In other words a preventative measure.

It would be great if you had these choices on the submission page for the type of comment you want to receive:

Your Reaction Only
I am only interested in knowing what you thought about the photo as presented. Assume that everything shown was by design. Did the photo make you feel anything? Does it hold any meaning to you? What did you think the photographer was trying to do here?

Critiques Only
I am only interested in a critique. Tell me what you think is lacking or can be improved upon.

Anything Goes
Feel free to comment on whatever you like.

On the voting page right above or near the comment box it would show the choice made by the photographer in a way that stands out (bolded/color font/icon?) Maybe also on the thumbnail page add another sort option. For example, you can sort by the votes you handed out also add one based on the type of comment preferred that way you can handle those in the same way you might handling voting. I know sometimes I'll sort by the photos I gave a 6 to as a means to see which might need bumping up. The same thing can be done with comment type to see which types of comments haven't been left yet. Thoughts?

Are we trying to round up all the ways to stop people commenting in to one thread? Sorry - not supposed to be debating the suggestions...

FYI, this is an old thread. I bumped up to add to the ideas.

Seems like not a bad idea. I wouldn't mind a box that says 'I'm not looking for comments on technical issues, everything here is how I want it to be' or something like that. Might save people spending time explaining how to fix things that aren't maybe broken.

If the previous suggestion is too much (sounds useful to me, however), perhaps just a simple checkbox to indicate if the photographer wants comments or not. Either way, it would aid the heavy commenters in putting the efforts where they are wanted.

I'd like a dollar for every time I (and others) have asked for something like that.

A few simple check boxes in our preferences which then lets others know who does or doesn't want comments would solve so many of our problems and arguments.

I dunno, this one has holes. Keep comments anonymous for a period of time and allow people to vote on their merits and issue special comment ribbons to the highest rated comments in each challenge.
