Sorry if this has been asked and answered already. And sorry if the answer is easily found elsewhere on the site.

Anyway, I am just curios about comments I see when scoring is in progress. I see that people follow their scores when scoring starts, and make comments about the lack of comments received. I see some comments like would the person who left me the 1 or 4 (insert score) please have the decency (or other word) to comment. My question is, how does the maker know the exact score breakdown they have received during scoring? Is it a variance in the free and paid memberships? I just entered my first competition, so just curious.

This a matter of updating coonstantly and doing the math.. for example, at 34 votes I had a 4.3824 and at 35 I had a 4.4286, so when I do the math, I see that the 35th voter gave me a 6. And I love them for it.

DUH (on my part). Old fashioned math, what a concept.

This thread has links to download several spreadsheets that can track your scores for you. If there is only one vote between entries, then you know what the vote was, and if it is only a couple of votes, it's still easy to figure.

That is the regular issue. My solution has been to try and set the example. I don't worry about voting on an entire challenge, just my 20% or so, but I try to comment on all or at least most of the ones I vote on. If I'm short on time, I'll skip commenting on the fantastic entries. After all, DrAchoo and the other ribbon hogs will get plenty of comments anyway.

I've learned more through making myself analyze others photos than from anything else here.

Edited to add:
Now, if the person who just slammed my Peace entry with a "1" could please leave a comment...

This is not uncommon. It's not even uncommon to END voting with less than a handful of comments if you are in the 5.0-5.5 range (i.e. average). Think about how voting happens. Pluggin' along hittin' number keys... You hit one that's REALLY good or bad. STOP. Comment. Continue pluggin' along...

Some folks only comment after going through and voting everything. Give it time.

Some people don't comment at all anymore due to the all too common backlash against constructive criticism. This is unfortunate because I'd rather get a constructive comment any day over "Nice picture."

thanks guys for answering my question! and your answers do make sense to me. as for me, i like to vote and comment at the same time. sometimes i do go back to make a few score changes, but rarely.
thanks again!

--Nic

P.S. I do like the constructive criticism! some people aren't as gentle when giving it though :(

sometimes I can find nothing to say about a photo and I do say "good photo" or similar (guilty)..... but those are usually my 5-7 ranged picks. I try to vote on all then go back and comment later, if not you get really burned out going through 200+ photos and commenting on all of them
