Loads of entries could do with turning the camera so that the shot is vertical, or diagonal, or anything but the standard, standing about 5ft/6ft off the ground, camera in the horizontal aspect.

Challenge to shoot something that isn't in that orientation, might make some people think differently - now I sound like an Apple ad

Funny that, my fourth entry (for the road) is my first horizontal entry. All other have been vertical. But I do agree that this would be a good challenge, making people think at alternative angles, etc. I often ask people in my comments if they had considered shooting this way or that, or cropping differently - these kind of considerations can turn an ordinary photo into an unusual one.

And it doesn't take any special camera to do it! ;-)

Sometimes it doesn't take a special camera -- I couldn't realistically recrop anything I shot to another format without really losing the quality.

But shooting a vertical instead of a horizontal -- I fully agree. Sometimes it just takes moving the camera or yourself around a little bit to take your photo up a notch.

I was lucky enough to spend some time learning darkroom techniques from a guy named Tillman Crane who once told me, "If you think you're close enough, take another step forward before you shoot." REALLY good advice, in my opinion.

Not that it has anything directly to do with the challenge subject which I think would be fun -- especially if people really got into it and emphasized the vertical nature of their shot in some way.
