Can anyone tell me why my graphics tablet will only work correctly on only one USB port on my computer?

I have a printer that only works on the same usb port and when I pur it into another port it doesn't recognise it. I know this doesn't help you but I am interested in the answer.

Is it an external USB hub or is it a direct plug-in?

direct plug in into one of 5 ports.

My advice would be to re-install the driver for the tablet. There shouldn't be any particular reason for one USB port accepting an external device and others not. Also make sure your operating system has all the recent updates.

Vista and the tablet driver are both updated. Driver has been unistalled and reinstalled.

The symptoms I get when I hook it into other ports is that the cursor jumps around.

USB ports are failing. How old is the machine?

Weird.

A few months old.. and no other device has this issue, including two other mice.

Are you sure that it's not the tablet that is messing up? Do you have another computer you could test it on?

What is the make and model of the graphics tablet?
02/15/2008 11:42:31 AM · #13
Adesso CyberTablet 6400.

I'm using it now. It functions perfectly in the bottom right rear USB port on my notebook, but if I hook it into either of the right side ports, where I usually hook up my wireless mouse, it gets all wonky.

I get strange happenings sometimes and it seems to be related to the order devices are connected. This could just be coincidental. The problem seem to go away almost entirely once the drivers for all USB devices had been updated.

I would try to boot the computer with the tablet plugged in and see if the comp finds it, if that does't work try to reinstall to usb drivers. Also have you installed any new hardware or drivers. If so there may be a conflectr between the newley installed drivers and the tablet. Hope this helps.

This is something common. Unlike flash memory cards, aka thumb-drives, some equipments such as scanners, printers and tables will not work if port changes. The IRQ I think set per device, and doesn't recognize if different port used. This might be only because of drivers recognize only one port (IRQ) after install. I think thumb-drives installs that each time you enter to USB hub, that's why works all the time, or if you install an equipment drive multiple times, which multiple IRQ information be available. Nothing to worry about it, best fix is to use the same port all the time.

I don't buy the IRQ thing. USB should handle that all just fine.

What's more than likely the cause is that the notebook has two internal ports (direct ports) and then a built-in USB hub to get you the other two ports. What this means is that certain devices aren't happy through a hub (those that require a decent amperage on the +5V pin) and therefore, don't work via the right side posts on the hub.

Most graphics tablets won't work on a hub unless it's powered. Most cell phones / iPods don't charge as fast using a non-powered hub. Mice, keyboards and the like have such low power consumption that as long as there's something on the +5 line, they are fine.

Not trying to sell anything. Just guessing, but it's a common thing, happens to me all the time. You might be right on internal hub, that's very possible as well.

I havent run into an IRQ problem since we were setting it with jumpers back in the day....

BUT I have noticed that when you plug a device into a different usb port that its neevr been used on it looks for and sets up the driver. I dont remember seeing this that much in XP but I see it all the time in Vista.

Im guessing for some reason its not looking for the driver automaticly and the previousd posters would be right in saying to try installing the drivers again on the different port you would like to use.

Put a little colored sticker next to the USB port you use... like "pink"

or you could tattoo rear bottom on your left hand but then you'd need to remember which hand you tattooed it on...
