Hello,

I just decided to join this place as an incentive to cultivate some photographic creativity and familiarity. I'm an undergraduate senior double-majoring in Philosophy and Political Science (I got interested in photography through flickr). I'm looking forward to competing in open challenges (and if I get into it enough, I may become a member). I just got a Nikon D50 for a decent price and am expecting a Nikkor 18-135mm lens next week to replace the 35-135 lens I am borrowing from a family member's old film Nikon (but you can always try and convince me to get a better lens).

Cheers
Kevin

Just fork over the 25 bucks. Resistance is futile. ;O)

Welcome, Being in the World. I wanted to be the first, especially of the philosophy contingent, but certainly of the non-ribboners. This is a place for totally what you make it, and all the weirdness you might desire. Wishing you fun at the very least.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

tnun, what? Another philosopher? A contingent even? What next, a challenge on Quinean ontological relativism?

There is a lot that exists in my imagination about dpc. If there isn't a philosophical contingent, there are at least poets. (Quine is not my tonic; I'm a Kantian, but that's a secret and doesn't appear in my profile).

Geez...give the guy a break. I mean...what can you get for $25-00? Think about it....thats nearly 49 cents a week!! And for what...?

Let me think...um!

- Friendship
- Endless knowledge on Canon...yeah, yeah...Nikon too.....and I suppose those other brands!
- Endless knowledge on Photography in Business.
- Endless knowledge on other stuff...like why your dog is puking all yoer your socks!!!!
- Double...sometimes triple the challenges.
- Makes you step outside the box.
- Makes you see the world differently.
- Makes you realise why you are doing things the way you are.
- Makes you realise you aren't alone in your crazy ways.
- Allows you to sell your prints...which can pay for more photographic gear.
- Keeps you up to date with all the latest technology...even before it hits the shelves.
- The ability to have access to 1000's of people all over the world of all nationalities, trades and abilities.
- Helps you fix your broken gear in the middle of the night when everybody else around you is sleeping...and usually avoiding outrageous technician costs.

Man the list could go on...but really...is 0-49 cents per week worth it....?

You tell me.

Oh man.........trust me to forget the update button....now he will need a straight jacket!

You will eventually join, though you could spend/fritter as much time on dpc as a user. But watch out for the update button - I personally think it should be banned.

But the real deal is the side challenges.

Indeed? My professor is a scholar of Kant and was a student and friend of Davidson.

Well, $25 is about 1/4 of the price of a 50 mm f/1.8. I've decided to just enter some open challenges. If I ever get a satisfactory rating, I will join. I might as well assess the situation before wasting three delicious meals.

Oh, and as for the Nikon? I figure a D50 and a 18-135 lens for $500 combined (including a 2gb memory card) is a pretty good deal, albeit not optimal. But I already had some Nikon lenses, and my brother-in-law, who sold me the camera, is bought into the Nikon system, which means I have something of a support system. But if you want to give me a Canon, I'd be delighted to receive it.

Indeed. Many are called Kantian, but not all are.

Sorry, that was priggish. I am not a scholar, and my acquaintance with philosophy extends rather backwards from Kant than forward. I have the opinion, merely, that after Kant philosophy took an appallingly wrong turn.
