I have had a serious fascination with the nearly ghost town of Superior AZ for a long time. I have driven there several times over that past 6 months, and in even that short of a time I have seen some magnificent structures disintegrating.

In order to give this grand old town some dignity, and to preserve what I personally know of it, I have put together a little photo essay.

This is the Main Street, photo taken at 10 am on a Tuesday., The streets are clean but deserted. There are many businesses, but they are boarded up and deserted.

This was my first view of the former Magma Hotel, a once glorious tribute to the hard working miners of Superior.

This rather innocent building is actually just a store front. if you look through the door, you see that not much other than sky is back there.

This is what actually exists behind those doors. There was a fire thgat destroyed the inside of this building.

Another view inside this fine old building.

And this is what the Magma Hotel looks like now. I wish the town of Superior would fine the money to have this grand building demolished and put out of its misery. Such a sad waste.

More photos of Superior can be found in my portfolio here.

People still actually live in this town, although i am not sure what they do for work. In another part of town there are a couple of busy restaurants and a hotel. I saw many cars and people in the "other" part of town. Makes this all the more sad to me.

This is really interesting, Barbara. I loved seeing these old towns like this in AZ. It is a shame that they can't stop the deterioration.

Apparently the worlds largest copper deposit sits right outside of Superior. When/if they start mining it the town may come back? (note: the topic of the mine is a local political hot button as the copper is under a popular rock climbing area)

And great photos Barbara, I've always wanted to wander around there shooting.

Barbara,

I really like this series of photos; you've done a great job capturing the death of a town.

Did you get a better camera or have your skills improved? The earlier images like this:

are nice but they don't seem to me to have either the technical quality nor the aesthetic sensitivity of the recent ones. The recent images appeal to me on every level!

Peace,

Great Pics

Superior used to be an old mining town, but then it closed down and the town went down hill from there. Some good news though theres talks about reopening the mine, so hopefully it will provide some funding for restoration on the older main strip
