Asked to submit orginal...question

Canon 12x IS USM (S3 IS built-in Lens) -- 36-432mm (35mm EQ)

I thought I would ask for validation upon the advice of a friend. I never had to go through the process and I think...THINK...I may have been messing up with whole time.

When I shoot, I shoot in RAW. The RAW files are then imported into Lightroom. If I look in the folder for the files, they are in DNG format. For the longest time I simply thought this was the RAW format of the file. SC mailed me back saying that it wasn't exactly an original because it's in DNG. What I would like to know is if I have screwed myself by not making the proper adjustments to the lightroom settings to import the files as something else. OR if I'm just missing something.

I already sent a similar message to SC for advice, but I thought I would get my answer much sooner here.

Rather than importng them from your card using Lightroom (or any other software), your should use your computer's operating system to copy the files from the card to your hard drive. If necessary, make them read-only (Windows) or lock them (Mac) so they can't be altered, then import a copy into Lightroom.

So does Lightroom change them? Should I stop using lightroom to import them?

Try checking to see if the NEF file is embedded somewhere else?

It sounds like Lightroom is converting the original NEF file into a DNG file. You don't have to stop using Lightroom to import files, but you might want to think about whether you want Lightroom to continue to convert them? Or maybe backup challenge entries somewhere else so the NEF file remains untouched?

you should have no problems importing into light room. the first drop box that says file handling click on it and select the line that says copy files to a new location and import. Not the line that says Copy photos as a Digital Negative and import. this will convert your raw files into a DNG and that wouldn't be your orginal.

I'm now confused as to what's happening. Am I to assume that all the photos I've taken to date are no longer RAW files, or originals?

Hi Heavyj,

DirtyPainter is referring to the "Import Photos" dialog box that comes up as you prepare to import. The one where you can enter keywords, select where to place the files etc. etc. At the very top of this page is a drop down box which you likely have set to "Copy photos as digital negative (DNG) and import". One of the other 3 options should be what you select.

If those are your settings, it looks like Lightroom is preserving your RAW file somewhere, and it's a matter of extracting it. Read how here. Figure 3.6

No Heavyj its on the dialog box that pops up when you import from your card.

L2 more than likely they may have been lost as it will preserve the originals where they were located at. My guess is Heavyj imported them into Light room when he inserted his card into the reader. The orginals are preserved on the card, but after the import he more than likely formated the card.
