I have a D70s and am looking into shooting RAW. What options do I have for software that will handle NEF files and what are the pros/cons of these different options?

Thanks!

one option is the software the comes with the camera "Picture Project" or you can use Adobe Photoshop or a few other editing programs. Some require a plug in some do not. I used to run the raw file through Picture Project to create a Tiff then worked on that with Photoshop until they released a plug in for PS.

Nikon Capture NX - Expensive at $120. Made by Nikon, though. SHOULD be bloody free.
Photoshop CS2/CS3 - Most Expensive choice, $900. Widest used.
Lightroom - Requires horsepower. Locks up on computers lacking h.p.
Picasa2 - Free, but lacking features.

You forgot Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro, Eug.

PSE - Sucks !@#$ for RAW conversion.
PSP - What's that?

RawShooter Essentials has been discontinued, but you can still get the free version here.

I love Bibble but the interface takes some getting used to. It has some excellent non-destructive RAW tools though. Check it out bibble

Raw files did not open in PSP9 for my D70s. Perhaps a later version?

Thanks everyone!

So what are the capabilities of Capture NX, and is it worth the money? I can't see myself getting too involved with editing pictures, but I will be resizing and adding borders, etc. Can Capture NX do these things or am i looking at getting PS2/3 for that?

ALSO, is there any difference in the QUALITY of the NEF handling of these two softwares? I would immagine the NX software should do a perfect job, how does PS compare? Both softwares output JPEGs?

I believe that the raw converter is the same between PSE and PS (someone please correct me), and PSE will handle everything you want to do. I don't have a current version of PSE, but I believe there are free trial versions of all the software that's been discussed in this thread. Try them and see which you like.

Personally, I prefer PS to CaptureNX. CaptureNX is slower than PS, and I don't need to do as many adjustments to get the look I want in PS.

I have PSE 4 for Mac (slightly different than for pc), but Adobe Camera Raw comes with PSE and works just fine. It's missing some of the bells and whistles that CS3 has, but nothing that you can't live without.

I use PSPX2 and it works fine. Here's what you do. Go get a Lexar Pro card, it comes with PSPX free plus free recovery software.

I use Bibble Pro and find it more than up to the task - I process RAW files in Bibble instead of ACR. Curiously, I tried Lightroom a few weeks ago and found the interface to be a little non-intuitive! Shows that I have been using Bibble too long...

If you're going to spend the money on Nikon capture, I'd just go with Lightroom. Very good raw conversions and much better editing features in my opinion. Plus, you get all the organizational abilities which I've found to be a huge time saver.

I have a Nikon D40, recently began shooting RAW, and PS 8.0. PS doesn't seem to recognize NEF. Help!
