Model Mayhem has a nice feature that allows a user to disallow viewing of his/her photos by non-members. We know it's not a definite way to protect images (no way is) but it does add a level of protection.

On MM, each user has the ability to switch whether he/she wants images viewable to the non-registered public. This would probably work well for DPC too, even for voting. Since non-registered users can't vote, really they don't need to see images that users choose not to show them.

Seems to work pretty well for that site. At least a registered user should have seen the ToS and can not say, "Oh, I didn't know I couldn't borrow these photos". Like I said, no guarentees, but just another level, if wanted.

Discuss?

Awesome idea. I second the motion. If not can we at least get up an angry mob and burn their vilages?

From a user-draw standpoint, I'm concerned that this would take too much away from the 1st-time visitor experience, where so many people register because they are so impressed by the photos.

What happens when people click on the icons for the ribbon-winning photos?
What happens when people read a forum thread with linked images that are integral to the discussion?

Image thieves are such a very small percentage of non-registered site visitors. I just want to make sure we're not throwing the baby (our main draw for new users) out with the bathwater.

I mostly agree with Mr. ClubJuggle on this one, though it's understandable to want to protect images from theft or borrowing. Unless non-registered users could only see thumbnails or some interim size... though that would add a huge strain to system resources, I'd imagine.

I would like to see this implemented.

Let non registered members view thumbs of challenge entries only

If you make it a perk of paid membership then I think Terry's concerns of drawing in new people is addressed.

ETA: meaning that only paid members will have the option of shutting out the public.

I don't agree that Terry's concern would be addressed. The new people still can't see all the pictures. I don't know the percentage of paid vs nonpaid members' photos on this site, but I still think the result would be a website that isn't all that interesting for potential members.

We have member's only forums, why not have members only portfolios. Then it's up to the member what images to put there and what ones to have public. The challenge images would probably have to remain public otherwise someone view a challenge would see alot of 'image hidden by photographer' messages.

That would also mean that anyone wanting to buy a print from a photographer that hides their images would have to sign up. Another person we've turned away.

You could make prints viewable. Besides I and I imagine a small percentage don't sell prints here.

Actually no. DPC Prints could be kept separate as I think it already is.

Only for portfolios, NOT challenge entries, though I'd prefer to see things remain open.
I recall that before I joined I did a lot of ogling in portfolios such as AlexSaberi's and was blown away. I'm not positive I'd have been so quick to join if I'd started wandering and found a great deal closed off.

I'm just concerned that we may become so concerned with protecting ourselves that we end up with a moat and armed ramparts :(

Choking down the site is a very legit concern.

I have been reading thru the recent stolen images threads, and an idea (rare thing indeed for me) came along. Perhaps the photos here could all be watermarked except when viewed by logged in users. That way, at least if they're lifted, then it would be someone who is registered here at DPC.
I know that it would take some Langdon time, but maybe it would help with the problem.

That's a very interesting idea. I don't know squat about techy stuff (how to make that happen) but it sounds like a very nice middle ground.
