I wanted to give some props to a photog I've met just once or twice over email. He's local to the SW Washington area and does some good work. I enjoy cruising his portfolio to find place I don't know about to go shoot. I found the Grist Mill from the Something Old challenge from him as well.

Anyway, here is a link to his version of Sunset Falls (he calls it Sunfire Falls which he knows is incorrect). Although he doesn't say it, I wonder if his is a panorama as he indicates he shoots with a Nikon and I'd think he'd need a really wide lens to take this all in. Perhaps he used a 12mm or so. My shot was on the 5D with the 24-105 at 24mm.

Personally I think his shot is superior.

I hate all you who live in Oregon. Utah as well! Nice link doc, looks like a really pretty place to go.

At 1300 some odd pixels wide, his certainly shows more detail than yours. As much as I like his, I find your composition to be more impactful. Maybe his is more about the waterfall, yours is more about the river... I would like to see yours in the 'large' version.

This fall looks a lot like one I found while hunting for my shot. I know it was in OR, but it's probably unlikely it was the same one as you have many to choose from.

Here is an interesting link I found while googling...Big fall
The link is from 05 but I thought it was cool that it had escaped notice since the 1950's.

Great story! I love hidden treasures like that.

If his EXIF says 18mm, I really have to wonder. I recognize one of the big stones in his shot as one I was standing on/by to take my shot, and at 24mm I don't get nearly the width he does. I'm still guessing a pano.

Jason,

to be honest I like your version better. The colour saturation and angle of the shot (lower) just gives it the edge.
I had a quick run through his portfolio. You are a good judge, he has some excellent stuff in there. I especially like the wooden bridge.

I gotta give the edge to the "other shot", but it wouldn't have shown as well in DPC format. Thanks for sharing, Doc.

I'm not sure what the EXIF indicates though. the 1345x682 is clearly a crop or a panorama as the aspect ratio is way off for a normal sensor. Even if I had raised my lens higher on the tripod, I couldn't get nearly the left to right that he has in his shot. 18mm should be the same as 24mm on a full frame sensor.

I asked him about it, but he coyly didn't respond. :)

The wide shot depends on the stones in my opinion. DrAchoo's waterfalling(sic) is much more interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I don't think it's better or worse. I agree that it's panoramic. Otherwise, it's the same shot.
