I can't make my way through the Textures challenge.. I have voted on half of them now and commented on 7%.. I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed and doubt I will be able to see/ much less vote/ much much much less comment on each photo.. How are you guys doing with the bulk? I have been at it for 2-3 days now... I think I have more than 2 and a half hours invested in the process already... I just thought of this now, or I would've posted this in the suggestions forum, but I am curious how people would feel about a maximum amount of submissions per contest? I guess I wouldn't actually be for the restriction, but I am curious how others feel. And if there were a cap- what do you guys think it should be?

It's a task, I have never voted in a challenge with this many entries, sure am glad I have high speed. However, I don't think a max. amount of submissions per contest is a good idea. You don't have to vote on all of them to make your vote count, it might even be better not to if you do it out of a sense of obligation. Maybe a cap of 1000?

Yeah I'm with you there. I suppose if you want to get past the over-saturated challenges, you'll just have to become a paying member, heh.

Do what you can..however ...and whenever you can...20%...over 400 submissions in any Challenge is hard..with this site...I can see more...coming... and you might miss a few of the "Great"... pics..but.. you are doing your share...hey. I have other things..and responsibilities also...lol... this is all in fun ...and LEARNING..

I vote first and then, if I have the time, make comments. I belive its more important to vote than to comment. I feel for people who are trying to vote via a dial-up connection, that must be so difficult. I am just grateful I have broadband.

Yes, I do this too - and lately there has simply not been time to make many comments so I now just vote and select two or three that I really want to comment upon and do those and if I have time I go back. I always comment on anything under a 5 because I think if you're going to vote under the 50% range you owe an explanation. I try to make useful critical comments and like someone else said, there is not enough time in the day to comment upon everything if you want to eat and sleep and hug your kids.

I am thinking of doing this: entering only every second challenge and voting only on the challenges in which I am not entered. Can't decide whether that's a good idea or not. Still thinking. See? I could have made 5 comments in the time it took to do this :)

Hmmm.

I think this is an excellent approach. In fact, voting on entries in a challenge you've entered may prejudice your vote (...however subconsciously), don't you think?

Actually, yes, I do. I posted in
another thread about this exact thing - not the part about feeling dejected - but the larger question ... about voting and art and all of that. Wondering whether letting your art be voted upon is wise. Depends on how you see photography I think - because it is an art with a very important technical skill aspect.

Anyway - yes, I was thinking I would vote better and truer were I not a contestant as well - we call them a challenge, but they are in fact a competition for a ribbon within a challenge to meet a theme. Not that I would purposefully vote low to win - I would not - but the mind is the mind.

Sometimes I just think too damn much.

Heh.

I finally finished voting. Trying to go back and do comments. I've received 13, which is great! I know how much I appreciate the comments and I need to post more.

Worst when you have hi-speed connection and your brother unplugs you so he can play his online games.

Catherine - I also try and comment on the photos I vote low. I have only just started commenting from the bottom upwards instead of the top downwards

If they made it easier to vote this way without the page resetting to the top scores, I would love to always comment on all the low scores from every challenge.
