hi there. i'll buy a nikon d80 body in a few weeks. but i can't decide which lens is better for it. so i have a few questions.
which lens has a stronger body and better glass? 18-70 or 28-85?
18-70mm is a dx lens and made for d-slr. 28-85 also do good job on d80 body?
i need your advises. thanks :) |

The 18-70 is a fine lens and in my opinion you would be happier with the wider lens because of the crop factor. I don't have the 24-85 but I do have the 18-70. The 28-85 would really be like a 42-125, so if you are shooting indoors or in a confined space it may not be wide enough.
I say 18-70
My 2 cents anyway.
Go Nikon! :-)

I'm rather pleased with my 18-70. Construction is on par with the D80 - well put together but not pro. |

I love my 24-85. Here is what is good and bad about it...
Good:
It is SHARP!
It has FAST focus eventhough it is not AF-S.
It can do half life size macro.
It can also do macro at 35mm setting which gives you very intersting perspective
It is SHARP!
Bad:
It has barrel distortions on wide end which I don't like.
Not as wide as 18-70. However on D300 it doesn't bother me as much as on D70. Weird.
Manual focus is hard for normal shooting. (who uses it anyway?) Macro focus is fine.
You get a some CA in macro at 85MM.
A bit heavy

Why don't you wait a few weeks (up to a month) and see if the Nikon 16-85 DX VR AF-S 3.5-5.6 is any good. Supposedly it will be replacing the 18-70.
It is pretty much confirmed now. You should hear about it during PMA at the end of the month. |

Yes but no macro and not f2.8. You should realy target lens to what you will be shooting. |

yes it's not f/2.8 but nikon's f/2.8 zoom lenses is very expensive for me. =( I think I'll be okay with this lens. I'll wait and see. |
