hello everyone i was just wondering what is the best and most efficient way to resize for challenges. i shoot raw and therefor my images are quite big, so i lower the dpi, and then drop the res down to the challenge rules of 640px. but I'm still like 150kb to 200kb OVER the open challenge limit of 150kb. Anymore messing with the dpi or the compression to jpeg and i can visibly see the quality suffering. I have Photoshop CS3, and Lightroom, if that helps. I have a feeling I'm not the only one with this problem, so if anyone who is knowledgeable could help I would truly appreciate it. thank you! =]

i find the quality of the image is kept much higher if you also reduce the size in 500 pixel increments - you get fewer jaggy lines.

Using what?

In CS3 there are 5 options,

Nearest neighbour (best for sharp edges)
Bilinear
Bicubic (best for smooth gradients)
Bicubic Smoother (best for enlargement)
Bicubic sharper (best for reduction)

No need to drop in 500 increments with these options.

I use PSP, though most of these option are the same. I usually get the best results with the Bilinear resampling.

For downsizing I've been using the Lanczos3 algorithm in FastStone Image Viewer (freeware)
