Been looking at this lens and contemplating getting one, but the main thing holding me back is that I've read a decent amount of reviews where people mention focus problems, lack of sharpness, etc in some copies, to the extent to where they've had to send it back and get a replacement or buy another one. As the place I'd be buying it from is by mail order, I can't test out a few of them to make sure I get a good one. :(

I purchased the 17-50mm tamron from here i was sceptical at first of third party lenses however the lens is well made and produces sharp colorful images. With the fast 2.8 it is an excellent lens for anything from landscape to portraits. The only down side i found is that the zoom ring turns in the oposite direction to canon and the auto focus is a little louder but that isnt really a major issue. I read lots of reviews and the lens you mention also had good reviews Hope you find that in some way usefull.

My Tamron performed superbly until a few month back, when all of a sudden, for no reason, the shots it started taking were VERY soft at anything below f5.6 I am going to be sending it off soon for a service so hopefully that will fix it, but up until that point it was a great lens.

Might chop it in for the Canon 24-70 this year though.

I feel the Tamron is a perfect lens for studio-photography, but outdoors, the lens lacks of sharpness and focus. First I thought it was me, but now I know it's the lens.

I'm thinking of replacing it with a Canon lens too.

I was going to ask you guys about the Tamron on a full frame body (my next upgrade, probs in March). I have the 17-50mm designed for APSC bods which i think is pretty much identical apart from the starting zoom point.

I love mine, in the studio it preforms great- great colours etc, outdoors it's generally ok. A bit soft at the corners and has some odd curvature that i'm not always fond of but for the most part, it's all good. especially for the price :)

Exactly the same experiance here. 2.8 suddenly became useless, during a paid job, of course. Still looks good above 5.6, though.

I've bought a few lenses new and used, in person, ebay, mailorder, sigma, tamron and canon. Never had a bad one.

My friend is an equipment junkie- he'll buy a lens cause it's cheap, use it for a while, and sell it. He's had 4 or 5 100 2.8 macro lenses, a couple of 50 1.4s, etc. I'll see him Sunday and ask, but I never hear him complain of getting a 'bad copy'.

I have noticed that when I get a new lens it takes some getting used to, especially if it's a new 'type' of lens (like my first telephoto or first 2.8 or first 1.8, first IS lens, etc) I also think a lot of people have issues with spending hundreds or thousands of dollars and that gives them unrealistic expectations. So they complain about the lens, or this copy of that lens, etc.

I would be the real incidence of defective/substandard lenses is 1 or 2%. There are 517 owners of the Tamron 28-75 2.8 on this site. 2% would be 10 'bad' lenses. I don't think you'll find that many.
