I am new to digital imaging. I received a copy of Photoshop 7. My problem is I don't really understand how to size a photo for entry into the challenges. I submitted 2 so far. The first one was extremly small and suffered for it. I submitted a new entry and is still small. Any help, tips, suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

yeah.. here is what you have to do

go into
Image | Image Size

make sure 'constrain proportions' check box in checked (as well as the others)

then in the 'Pixel Dimensions' Area,
change the LARGEST side to
640 pixels (this is the largest size you can have)

Then when you save the jpeg... you can see how large it is going to be saved as.. so you will have to make it just under 150 kb... you will have to change the quality (the slider).

Did this make sense?

or actually you can use 'save for web' under
File | Save for web
and this will show you how large (an image) it will be posted, and tell you under the image the file size. .and again you will have to make sure it is less than 150kb. if it is larger you will have to select to save it at a lower quality.

If you want to view how large your image is, while working on it in photoshop, just go to
View | Actual Pixels

This will show you how big it will be on DPC.

In Photoshop, click the menu item "Image" then "Image size" a box will open. Make sure the check box "Maintain Proportions" is checked. Then look at what is the highest value, the width or the height and make it 640, wich is the maximum allowed in dpchallenge. If it's the portrait make the height 640, if it's landscape the width.
Now File/Save As and in the dialog that opens if the size is bigger than 150kb lower the Quality under "Image options" until size is lower or equal to 150kb.

This is how I do it:

Image -> Resize - Make sure the constrain proportions box is checked and set the largest dimension to 640 pixels. Click OK.

Zoom in to Actual Pixels - Just to make sure nothing got goofy looking.

File -> Save for Web - adjust the quality so that the filesize is as close to 150K as possible without going over.

Submit that file.
