I currently have the Lowe Pro Slingshot 100AW. I love this bag, but I am going on a multi month trip where I will be packing extremely light. I will be taking my D50 and one lense. On my old film camera I have this great hardened leather case that just fits the camera perfectly, do those exist anymore? I just want something that offers a little protection while it is in my backpack, no padding, just some basic protection.

Take a look at the Tamrac Velocity 6. It just fits my Nikon D80 and 18-200 lens. It works pretty much like you describe, I stick it in my backpack while traveling. But you can wear it and almost not know you are wearing it it's so comfortable. And it doesn't get in the way.

It's a bit too snug for my D80, though it works well, but for the D50 it would be perfect.

That Tamrac one is still a little bigger then I want. I did a bit more searching and I think the kind I want is called a semi-hard case, or "ever ready case" I have just not seen them in any camera store that I have been in. I will have to call around and see If one of the shops has one.

I love my current bag (just like the blue one shown on the MountainSmith main page), but mine isn't actually a camera bag, it is a hiking butt back that I've added padding to. I didn't know they made camera bags at the time and since our store in Okinawa only had these, I got one.

I only have my oly and two lens so it is just the right size. I have my filters, spare battery and cards, a weatherproof pancho, usb cable and a few other misc items in it. I use the side pockets (netted ones) for either drinks, my keys or once in awhile my lenses if I'm switching back and forth a lot.

I have put it around my waist with the shoulder strap loosly across my chest and ridden my mountain bike over ten miles then walk around a park for hours and it is like it is not even there. When just walking around I undo the waist straps and tuck them out of the way in their compartment in the back and just have it worn across my shoulder so I can swing it back and forth as needed, and in rare cases it has two small handles to carry it with. I love it but will most likly have to upgrade if I get any more lenses.

more specifically...actual camera bags

eta...just looked at the tamrac...this might be bigger than you want also but I can't imagine anything smaller fitting your needs.

Zing is not a hard cover, but offers light weight protection.
