One of the ways, IMO, you can get direct traffic and gain membership thereby is to let users send a link to their friends about a photo they particularly liked and want to share with some one who may enjoy it.

Actually I have suggested the site to several people. (Recently one of my friends from Bulgaria has gone ga ga over it too!) But sending a sample of what they can expect is a better inducement. I cannot see a facility to share the photos.

Let me know if there is one. Else how about creating a tool to "Share this photo with friends"?

Tnx in advance!

You could just email them a link to the photo.

Yesterday when I recommended the site to another friend of mine in Hungary she came back to say teh site is impressive but the name by itself does not give a clue as to wht the content might be unless one reads the byline/sub title.

Here's the coversation:

"12:15 AM Krisztina: i have just checked....without the subtitle i wouldnt have found out what it was....
me: yes ofcourse"

Does the site name call for a review?

Just my 2.0 cents worth!

When I want to share one of these photos with a friend, I copy the address from the top of the browser page while I am viewing the photo. I past that address into an email. It's quite simple and I have done it many times.

The site's name does have a rather--ahem--interesting alternate interpretation. lol

Thats precisely I have been doing! But why cant the site become a little more user friendly? Is it it wants to keep an air of elitism - 'if u really want it, u better take the trouble?' attitude?

IMO this is an EXCELLENT site but w/o a matching attitude.

This site has alot of room for improvement.

1. User Reviews on Equipment, (Coming Soon) lol Has been coming soon since the start.

2. A link to Watched Threads on our Profile pages would be nice. Asked for it a year or two ago but nothing became of it.

3. Multiple Uploading, So we can select and upload more than one photo at a time.

4. A bit more control over our profiles, Ability to change colors of fonts background etc...

5. A check Box on everyones profile that is marked Ignore this user, And would automatically make them disappear.

6. Voting on Challenge Suggestions, I wish they would throw out 3 choices each week and let us vote then start the winning challenge the following week.

I could go on, But It is really no use, because they are still working on User Reviews. lol

I'd like to add some:

7. The exif information should be required once you upload a photo, and acquired automatically once you upload a photo. Flickr is able to acquire exif information. Then the amount of exif information could be discounted from the file size limit (on challenges).

8. They should get a deal with some stores so we can check prices for equipment with one click. This would help keeping the site, financialy speaking, and it would be great for us.

9. Monthly free studies should offer a prize, simple and cheap, but being a difficult challenge, the winner should get some compensation. The prize could be something like filters, dpc prints, wrist wraps, lens protectors, etc...

10. Low scores less than 4 should have comments, maybe selectable from drop downs containing some common list of frequent mistakes that could then be assigned to each picture. Not sure about how it could be improved but it's very disappointing to get low scores without any justification.

11. Allow the site to be viewed in more languages, like Spanish, German, etc... Portuguese would be great too!

The way it is, it seems that the owner(s) of the site is (are) not interested on what their customers (we, since we pay for membership) want. The site lacks features that are commonly available on any modern site, the features that we mentioned are very basic, but still DPC insists of not implementing them. Most times I feel the suggestions are just ignored. I can't imagine another reason then lack of interest of the owner (and maybe lack of money to pay someone to implement the changes, since the site depends earns money only from membership fees.)
I'm surprised how nobody had yet the idea of making a similar site including those features. I thought about it many times... Sometimes I feel I'm here because of lack of alternatives.

Ah, and I don't need to mention that a better site, with more features, with external income from advertisers, with modern look and features, with better forum, etc, would attract more paid users, and this means cheaper membership. I may be wrong of course...

No argument from me there. And the improvements need to be done on a schedule that we hold to with at least some degree of accuracy.

Now this you can already do. Zip 'em up, and select the .zip file for upload. It's worked for years.

Ive done that once but couldn't get the file to unzip, much like a girlfriend I had back in Highschool.

I dunno.....I'm quite happy with the site.

They make changes periodically, I like that, and they also stay consistent and don't institute a bunch of "Features" that end up being a hassle 'til they iron them out, all the while using its paid members as the beta team.

I'm here to participate in the challenges and work on my skills with help & practice throughout various side projects and threads on photography.

I get that......in spades.

My photography abilities and skills have increased beyond the wildest imaginings that I had when I got here.

I cannot say anything but that DP Challenge has been prolly the best investment that I've spent ever for my love of, and development of, photography.

EVERYTHING about my photography is better because of DPC, not the least of which is a Hell of a deal I got on my current camera body from another DPCer, and it didn't cost either of us a nickel to utilize the site for the transaction.

The GTGs have not only helped my techniques, but enriched my life as well, adding new friends to my life who are just as weird dedicated to photography as I am.

So.....I *do* refer the site, but when I do, I send a link to the main page, and one to my profile page because it's generally someone who I share a common interest with and I want them to see what I do here.

I guess I don't feel as though it's necessary to be asking for more out of a site that I feel is one of the best things going and that I continue to reap rewards from on a constant basis.

Just my $0.02 US......YMMV!

NikonJeb, that is a beauty history of improvements, I've improved a lot too, but not yet as much as I'd like. IMHO the site is as great as you think, but still needs improvements. Some of the improvements would help even more everybody to improve.
Exif data for example, contains more information than those that are usually requested on the challenge submitting form. This is ridiculously easy to implement, I can't understand why they don't implement. I'd even make myself available to help on this implementation for FREE.

Some of us are also customers, I just think they should hear to us a little more.

EXIF data is stripped from the file when using Photoshop's SaveForWeb feature -- a recommended procedure for maximizing quality within the file size limit. I believe the EXIF data is retained when using the "regular" SaveAs function.

There is supposed to be a "major site revision" in the works, and it was previously announced that there would be few (if any) incremental upgrades in the meantime. And no, no one (except Langdon) knows the timeline for any of this.

Yes, it is......I save the file for challenges right before I submit in its complete form so that I have the complete history of the steps I took editing the file.

Saves time on validation....8>)

I'm just content to pursue what I came here for in the first place without asking for more.

I'm just *really* glad that DPC is here, and that I found it.

For me, it's so exactly "right where I need to be" that if Langdon didn't do anything at all, I'd still gladly renew again & again for the camaraderie alone.

The tips, techniques, challenges, GTGs, and constant improvements in my photography just make it that much better.

I don't usually use Photoshop, I preffer using Corel PSP. But I know most people like Photoshop and use it.
Corel PSP allows you to keep exif data when saving using the jpeg optimizer. I just remove exif data because of the very limited file size imposed by DPC.

Just curious, is the "Save As" function on Adobe Photoshop worse than "Save for Web" function? How do they act on the resulting file?

Just want to clarify that I love DPC, but if there was another web site that includes the features that I mentioned, I'd probably move to this other web site.
It looks DPC site is stopped in the past, it did not followed the normal advance in technology in some aspects and each minimal change seems to be too difficult to implement.
It looks like the owner is not having many time to deal with the site, which is completely understandable since we all have our lives to deal with.

I put myself available to help with any improvements for free. I'm an experienced IT professional, I work in IT since 1999, passed on various areas of IT, so I'm sure I can help with some IT related stuff.

It was a very nice post and helped me a lot in learning about traffic.I’ve always enjoyed the comments as a form of discussion. Sometimes it results in traffic or subscriptions but most of the time it results in learning a bit more about the topic you are writing on.

I guess I'd say if it's not broke don't fix it. So I am ok with the very few incremental changes in the 2 years that I have been here. As others have said, any additional bells and whistles might be useful or helpful, but probably will not improve my photography skills very much.

I think the most important change they ever did was to put the challenge description on the front page for all to see. As someone who leans towards a stricter view of DNMC, it always amazed me that folks would shoot and/or vote based on the challenge title and never even read the challenge description :)

Funny thing.....since writing that, I've put two images on my profile page, and have gotten two 6+ scores in Free Studies (Assuming the the 6.37 I'm sitting on now stays put! LOL!!!) which is to me just another indication that my learning and improvement process is still progressing.

But what really makes me the most happy is that I've been meeting new people here, sharing thoughts and experiences with them, and in general just enjoying life at DPC that much more.

There has also been a new mentor in my life here who has been helping me to learn and understand more about processing.

Again, these are the unseen, unspoken benefits that IMNSHO are impossible to put a price on even should I want to, are instead, invaluable to the photog who lucks onto this place.

Just sayin'.......8>)
