In addition to the icon list at the top of the textarea for editing posts, a "Characters" list would be good for non-standard characters not found on US English keyboards. This would be similar to the one found at Wikipedia, where clicking a symbol would simply put it in the textarea at the caret position. Kind of like below (though the letters would be small, individually linked, and not underlined perhaps, or otherwise distinguished from other hyperlinks).

Á á Ć ć É é Ä ä Ë ë Ï ï Ö ö Ü ü Ç ç

Or, perhaps better, a single box with a hypercharacter icon, which when clicked would show the list of characters...

Thanks for the great new buttons... but I'm bumping this request too. :-)

I have a piece of paper near my computer with the codes for the characters I commonly use written down -- the most common three or four I just know. If I don't I use Character Map (Windows) or KeyCaps (Mac) to look it up.

If you really want them here, I like the pop-up list to avoid too much clutter up there ...

Also a reminder that there is "supposed" to be a fairly major revision in the works, and that most minor upgrades are on hold.

Now (OS 10.5.x) the "Character Palette", a menu bar item set in Preferences > International > Input Menu.

Thanks for the update -- I still use OS 9 about 80% of the time at work, though I have 10.5 also. :-)

For now, I usually just Google the word I want and then cut and paste the appropriate character, et voilà! :-)

I've done that too. :-) It'd be easier and faster if there was a clicky list above the edit box though (and oh-so-simple to add, I must say).
