I get asked this question a lot recently. I honestly don't know how to answer. I like taking pictures of anything I find interesting, but it seems that on DPC, anything portrait in nature seems to do well for me.

Do most of you find that you fall into a certain area of photography that you're just better at than other types? Maybe have more interest? Or maybe you feel you have a better 'canvas' to work with when it's a particular type of photo and so you stick with that?

I'd say studio and products work well for me.

My only answer is "Mediocre"... as voted on by the DPC populous. ;)

Mediocre on this site is a really good shot elsewhere. Just remember how high the standards are here.

I pretty much experiment with whatever suits me. I am still trying to find my style. I do tend to bypass the shots of stuff that have been done so much they are cliche. If I take a picture of something well known, I will try to find a unique perspective. That being said, once I find that unique perspective, I will usually find that someone else has already done it.

I completely disagree... DPC is the relm of landscapes and macros.

I tell everyone that I'm a people photographer, seeing that most of what I shoot involves people, whether it be portraits, boudoir, or weddings.

The kind which involves a lot of dirt and unremarkable subjects..

I find that for me, the camera is what makes me look at life just a little closer and always wondering......"What does it look like from over there?", so I have a tendency to try and look at things more fully because of it.

What that means in terms of what kind of photography that I do?

LIFE photography......if I'm there and I'm living it, I take a shot of/at it.

Yes, there are a lot of landscapes and macros here. I'm not a big fan of either to the extent I see here. However, there are some remarkable ones that I love.

I like setting up a shot that makes the viewer laugh really...or say "That's cool. I wonder how he did that?"

Maybe you should go to Iceland and see if you could find some inspiration

That is a common question.
I feel like I do everything (almost) - and this makes things more expensive because I need/want the equipment for all scenarios (landscape, portrait, etc).

My most common answer these days is 'you' followed by talking them in to an impromptu session.

Yes to all three questions, but I have no idea what to call it. "Fine art photography" is too froo-froo and pretentious. "Ecstatic snapshot" isn't my style. Someone told me I take pictures of introversion and isolation. I'll go along with that.

posthumous's reply (stealing a march on me yet again) together with fotomann_forever's (macro and landscape preponderance on dpc) make me wonder how much of what we show on dpc actually represents what we shoot and like to shoot.

For me, at least, almost nothing like it. I even got a comment to that effect on my self portrait entry.

I tend to do the kind most people don't care for... but ya know.

I say People/Fashion and Events/Journalism [concerts/plays/etc] and Macro

Fashion, beauty, lifestyle.

I tell people I just shoot whatever's in my way.

I too get asked this a TON and my response is always,

"I specialize in portrait and burlesque photography but I enjoy any good challenge and try to avoid the studio at all costs".

They love it, I love it, it works.
